I'm pretty sure they made a W123 200D, but it wasn't sold in the U.S.

OTOH, if the OP meant an '82 300D, I can say that my '83 had an MSRP of $30,9xx dollars according to the Nevada DMV.

Cool! How'd you get it?

Maybe you could just give them the price of a U.S. market 240D from the same year and call it good. Why do they want to know?

Edit: 82 or 85? Text of OP says 82, but title says 85. My idea won't work if it's an 85 because there was no U.S. market 240D that year.

I bet it would be low twenties. they were priced lower over there and had simpler equipment mostly.

That would not work, they only have them for US spec cars sold at US dealers.

They might have a lead on it though. Especially if you can find someone who spole English at the Mercedes Benz historical archives in Stuttgart, and probably someone does, it is common in Germany as children learn many languages in school.

The price would be in 1985 Deutschmarks at the time. You would then have to look up the US to DM exchange rate at that time....that would not be hard.

Likely a determined Internet search could parse that information out also.

I will go take a look for you.^^^^

This car was a gray market car, the W123 200d was never sold at Mercedes Benz dealers in USA; and fewer yet were imported here, because the savings on gray market cars were the highest with the high end Mercedes cars, like the SEC and SEL.

Here you go.

For 1985, according to this, the W123 200d was already out of production in Germany

The 200d Dieselmotor W124 limousine (sedan in the USA) was priced at DM 32,604 in October 1984

These were like Stuttgart taxicabs.

The last W123 200d limousine was sold in 1984. The price was DM 28,887.60

Them you would have to add to that, the option prices on the particular car you are looking at. They are here also.

http://www.meinbenz.de/preislisten/W123%20Preisliste984.htm

Isn't the internet and your Mercedesshop Diesel heads great?

I will leave it to someone else to find the answer to what the US= DM exchange rate was for 1984.

I do know of a brand new '84 500SEC lapis blue gray market car brought to California. The gray market importer paid the equivalent of $40,000 for it out of Germany directly.
(late edit:^^^ They cost about 88,464 DM new in Germany)

1982 or 1985? Your post is not totally clear.

So, for 1982, the W123 200d cost 24,939.10 DM

Options are extra

JimB, a big thanks for finding this site. I had it bookmarked once before and lost it when I had to reinstall my OS in my computer. I thought I would never find it again until now.

In 1985 the exchange rate was (I googled it) 2.95.

So base price was about 9K in Germany it appears.

Explains the existence of the Gray Market Mercedes cars in the mid 1980s

^^^No wonder there were so many gray market Mercedes Benz cars imported in the early-mid 1980s.

Even with the DOT/EPA compliance costs added on the savings were tremendous.

Imagine what you saved buying a new '84 Euro spec 500SEC for 88,464 DM in Germany and bringing it into the USA via the gray market.

That would be about $30,000 to buy a brand new flagship SEC coupe!!!
Add $10,000 in EPA/DOT costs and you were on the road!!

Amazing!!!

Explains why the US Mercedes Benz dealers got hurt so bad, and why they successfully lobbied the US Congress to kill the gray market in 1986.
