Hi Guys,
My son was driving my 1991 300D 2.5 Turbo (203K miles) today and told me that it made a high pitched squeal and then had markedly decreased power. It was driven about 5 miles home after the incident. The car ran fine save for decreased power.

When he got home, I took the intake pipe off to see what the turbo looked like. It looks like one (or possibly more) of the intake impeller blades came off and wedged the impeller. The impeller won't turn at all. I tried to take some pics. Please take a look and see what you think.

Obviously I'm looking at a new turbo here (or rebuilt). Are there any other items I should order at the same time i.e. oil line seals, turbo gaskets, new bolts, etc.?

I 'm thinking I must be incredibly lucky to not have had metal fragments launched into the intake manifold. Thanks for your input.

CW

You are indeed lucky! That could have certainly destroyed your engine. Yes, time for a new turbo.

By the way, does anyone have a good source for new or remanufactured turbochargers. This one appears to be a Garret. Thanks.

Bummer! While it's apart, you could ditch the vacuum wastegate, and convert to the pressure type... this would allow you to kill the EGR. Details are in this thread.

Any word yet on the part number for the wastegate with the proper rod length?

To my immense frustration, no. The one shown in the photos works fine with either trimming the rod length, or as someone else did, shimming the actuator away from the bracket a similar amount. I haven't given up yet though, after a wrap up a couple of other projects, I'll pester some other vendors and see what they can find.

The wastegate actuator I am using on mt VNT is from a SDL and has an adjustable rod, maybe it would work.

Have you given any thought to pulling off the intake manifold and cleaning out any pieces the might be inside?

sounds like you lost the bearings in inside the turbo. The squealing was when the bearings went out and then it seized up. The good news is that yes the engine was not destroyed, the bad you need a new turbo. Hope that everything comes out ok.

How do you check to see if your turbo works at all? I just got this old car and I have no idea if it works still....

The reason I ask is because I was revving the engine in park yesterday and all the sudden I heard a noise and it was kinda like a squeal and the pitch kept rising and then it just stopped?

with the engine cold and intake fitting removed from the turbo shove your hand in there and see if you can easily spin the compressor wheel and check for any play( side to side as well as in and out)...

also inspect for compressor blade damage

A complete cartridge would be required after the kind of faiure seen in htis case. Where does one go to get a rebuild? I've used Majestic Turbos in Waco, TX but I wonder who else in doing rebuilds now?
I have a defective 350D turbo I want to get rebuilts (with its .55 trim and an intercooler, I am planning on hotrodding my '87 300D)
