Window banging when motor engaged

The regulator on my front pass window is banging when I roll the window up or down. Took the door panel off. There are a few metal shavings and I can push the window up and down a bit without hitting the switch. Is there a way to tighten all this or should I go ahead and order a new regulator. I can see the motor popping towards the inside of the car. I have not taken the metal plate off that to check further.

What is the year and model of the car. It could just need bushings in the rail.

Can you post a picture of what you are seeing? The arm that raises and lowers the window is attached to the gearbox with rivets. Sometimes these rivets start to break, creating the metal shavings you are seeing and allowing the arm to move and make noise. The entire assembly is attached to the inside of the door with screws; these don't usually come loose but not impossible and this too could cause your problem. In my experience, replacement of the mechanism (less the motor) may be your only option.

Sounds like the teeth are worn off the regulator. Time for a new one.

Same thing mine did. Was a bolt that fell off. Make sure yours are all there. Don't condemn the gears unless you actually see damage. $125 part as I recall...for the coupe.

New regulator?

Mine made this sound before a final pop and the sound of metal falling down into the door. Fun times replacing that regulator. Made the investment in the paper manuals very worthwhile. Never did get the broken gear parts out. Was it poor form to not put back that plastic barrier between the door panel and the metal frame of the door?

Looked for a bolt or anything that might had fallen off. Will pull the metal plate and inspect some more. I'll let you know how it goes. This place is great by the way. Thank you all.

Should he check to see which type of regulator is in that car? I know that 85 SD's had 2 different types of regulators that were installed at assembly. I don't know about that year and model. Jim

hmm not sure of that. It couldnt hurt since it sounds like he's already that far anyways. If he's buying used, it won't matter, most will come with the motor attached anyways.

Key word there is "most". I went into not knowing about the 2 different regs and I am sitting on the wrong one that I bought used online and waiting for the new other type to arrive. Live and learn.

He has the coupe. That is technically a different size than the 4 doors, if I am not mistaken. However, I have one that didn't fit exactly, I assume it is from a 4-door and one bolt had nowhere to go- so I wired it in there with bailing wire and it works fine.

Just curious, was yours a Brose? I don't think I've ever seen the other brand on any of the ones I've done, but you always have to check first!

I think it is the Brose. It has a huge one third pie shaped gear that rides the motor. As opposed to a much smaller gear that takes a different motor with a larger drive gear. Both types bolt right up to the door, but the motor gear on my motor was too small to drive the smaller geared regulator. Yeah, now I remember, my motor said Brose coberg on it. Jim
