Question Would you buy this one?

Hi All,

I've located what seems to be a good deal on a 240D, I can pick this baby up for 1200.00. I'll have some pics after tomorrow morning...I've seen the car, body is good, no rust, glass is clear, very very little clouding, paint is in exceptional condition (orginal paint). I will drive it in the morning.

"The car has had maybe 3 or 4 titles, but it has always been in our family. My wife's ant bought in in Germany and brought it over here. The odometer sticks, but it has about 200000 miles on it.
All the door locks work, windows are manual. There is no sunroof. I've never had any problems with fluid or oil leeks. The oil pressure is max. at idle. The engine goes off and comes on immediatly without problems. It doesn't burn much oil at all. Gas mileage seems to be fine. I replaced the glow plugs 6 month ago and the battery 3 weeks ago. Transmission takes some getting used to, but it works good (only 4 gears) - automatic. There is a
lot of play in the steering, but I've come to like it. A/C doesn't work, but the fan blows. It doesn't have Klimatrol. Interior is brown leather."

Good Deal - based on aforementioned information? Any advice on things to check outside of the obvious would be greatly appreciated.

tnx,
jeric

What year is it?

And, if you don't mind me asking, why do you want it? Just because it seems like a good deal? I know the feeling. I've had to force myself to walk away from cars for sale: "Man, what a beautiful 300CD, it only needs this and that and it'll be perfect.. I should buy it!" Ha! If only I had a 6-car garage, for my 240D and a 300D and a couple of 300CDs and maybe a 300TD for the days I need to haul a bunch of stuff...

"Collect them all!"

OK Nathan,

It's a 1983...

You win but THANKS!

I WAS going to buy the car because I felt like it was a good deal. I need it like I need another hole in my head. I already have two cars with a single car garage (bug like you, and my benz) and really don't have room for another with out my neighbors complaining. I have the extra cash so I figured what the hell, but, your words of reality have set in.....

I suspect I will just concentrate on my Benz and be happy with that.

THANKS,
jeric

What's wrong with having too many cars?

Like several others here on this board, we have 5 running cars for 2 drivers. It really is nice to have plenty of back up rides should cars start going down. Example - not long ago I had the 280 in pieces just doing some deep maintenance and repairs when the H2O pump took a dump on the Suburban. The wife was working and I had to get parts, no problem I fired up the Mustang and went to town.

If it's in your budget, why not??

Sounds good to me

I now have 3 old diesels and like the other guys, think that backups are great. Starter is going on one but who cares cuz I have others. I like your price and especially the bit about not burning much oil. If the compression is good the little stuff doesn't matter. On my 300D-T, the air was in the same condition as yours and only took 16 oz's of freon to make it cold. Perhaps you'll be fortunate. Good luck!

Buy it MB's carry so much status no matter what age model or condition . With three MBs in your drive your neighbors will think your an agent in the CIA or at least a diplomat and leave you alone. My Gold 81 SD get more attention than brand new 40k SUV's . I don't think it's possible to have too many ,but I live on a farm with parking space for at least forty of the lovely ducklings.......

Hi Bill,

It's an 83, 80k, original owner, all records, all service done by MB. One tiny rust spot on the hood near the windshield washer nozzle.

and yuppers, she is a jewel.

tnx,

Nice looking ride Eric. What model is it 300D/240D? Where did you find it? I am assuming it is in the local area. I would like to get another 300D but the wife says something has to go and I really am not ready to get rid of the E320 .

I'll guess a 240D since it doesn't have a tach...although it must be the top-O-the-line 240D with the alloy wheels and auto transmission.

Yes, it's very nice. White looks good on this body style. I think if I were buying another I'd probably search for a good 300CD... or maybe save my money and go for a 6.9 But, I don't really have money, room, or need for another car right now. (well, I won't when I get the 240D back together!)

I would guess it is a 240D based on the black plastic air vent covers at the base of the windshield. Another distinguishing feature at the rear is black rubber at the base of the tail lights. The 300D has chrome vents and a chrome strip over the rubber on the tail lights.

Beautiful car though. Enjoy it. Jim

It's a 240D!

I'm told by the owner it has every available option! After the deal is completed I'll get some better detailed pics. I must be crazy I really don't have room for this car.

Anyway, the headliner and other items of note are in surprisingly great shape. The carpet in the trunk looks new.

If someone would be so kind to tell me what kind of tires these cars were delivered with (I think it has the original spare) I'd love to know. Original spare or not, it has never touched the ground.

The only thing I found of note that seems important the vacuum distributors (3 and 4 way black rubber deals) are dry and show signs of cracks.

I will also be receiving the consumer copy of every time it was serviced at MB. This is like bringing home a new baby

Thanks yall, have a good one,
Eric

These cars came with 175/78SR -14 tires. Some were Continentals as MB owns a chunk of Continental Rubber Company or what ever the official name is, and others came with Michelins or Pirellis. The 300D came with 185's I believe, and I ran 195/70 HR-14's on mine as the 175's were just unable to deliver what that W123 chassis was capable of on winding roads. The same is true of the brakes, the 175s were too narrow and easy to lock up. Enjoy the car, it looks great. Jim
