If it's an ABS car: rear ABS sensor.

ABS sensor, I never thought of that. I thought ABS sensors were closer to the wheels.

How does the sensor work. I mean how does it determine if just one wheel locks up

It can only sense if the driveshaft rotation speed is not correct when compared to the vehicle and it will release the brakes to both rear wheels. It cannot sense the speed of the individual wheels nor can it modulate the individual wheels. It's the cheap version of the system.

I think that's what's called a 3-channel system, front left, front right and rear, vs a 4-channel system with a sensor at each wheel.
