No Low end power, rough idle

I have a 84 300d. I just put a used engine in it. When I got the car the engine was already out. Everything seems to work OK, but there is no low end power, and it idles rough. I adjusted the valves, Checked the timing - it was perfect. Checked for fuel leaks, replaced all the hoses and filters. Trans is starting in low gear and works fine. At take off it has nothing, you have to floor it to get rolling. At 10-25mph there is no real change in acceleration from 1/4 of a pedal to the floor. After 25mph it's fine, lots of power. Have I over looked something or should I just pull the pump and have it gone over?

did not have rough idle problem but I had "power" problem with my 83D.. would slowly leave a stop sign/light and not have power until I got up some speed. My transmission guy immediately (on the phone) referred to the trouble as a "low gear piston". I had never heard of such a thing, but he worked on it (replaced the piston) and everything was fine afterward. I don't remember the price I paid.. maybe less than $250?? Hope this helps.

Check the line to the aneroid control on the fuel pump. It can get clogged and will prevent getting full fuel. As for ruff idle it is most likely bad injectors.

Nscarpi,

This checklist will remedy your slow starts:

* Use some Lubro-Moly diesel purge (available here)
* Change both fuel filters
* Disable EGR
* Adjust and lube throttle linkage
* Clean out hollow bolt/banjo fitting at rear of intake manifold
* Clean out switchover valve
* Adjust wastegate (use a boost gauge)
* Adjust ALDA (be careful...they can break without warning)

I'm a proponent of wastegate and ALDA adjustment ever since I was able to tweak my own successfully. There are numerous threads here on these subjects, as well as the Easley/Ritter site to help you.
