Intro and coolant question
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and have been skimming around for a few hours trying to come up with a concise answer to my question about coolant: which is the proper type for a '79 300D, non-turbo? I picked one up for $600 on Friday. This is my first diesel and first Mercedes. It needs some TLC, however I'm very happy with it thus far. I'm not sure what kind of coolant is currently in it, which makes me want to flush it out and put in some fresh stuff. I've been searching various sites and surfing in general and can't seem to find a specific and definitive answer to this question. My understanding thus far is that my '79 300D has 617 model engine; iron block and head. Does this mean that I can use the regular green stuff or do I need to use G05 for other metals and plastics? Do I need an SCA additive to prevent cavitation? I'm hoping to receive an answer along with an explanation of why it is so. Thanks a lot everyone, and nice to meet you all. |

MB branded or Zerex G-05 to protect the heater/radiator plastics and heater/radiator core.

Afterthought...
I debated whether to post this in the vintage forum, also debated whether to submit this inquiry as a reply to the string a little way down the page titled "Coolant" by S.Scogin. I thought I might get a more comprehensive answer with regard to newer vs. older model coolant requirements by posting here as opposed to the vintage forum, and the "Coolant" string seemed to be getting a little "heated", so I thought I'd start this new string. I hope that decision is ok by everyone else - I don't mean to clutter the board.

If you use the G-05 you do not have to add any SCA's for cavitation issues. Which is sort of the final nail in the coffin for going ahead and using it on an older Diesel. It seems the best option really.

They do indeed. And it's not just here at this forum either. Every car forum seems to be a real touchy subject.

Yah - welcome to the forum and you'll generally get a better response in starting your own thread in DD. Tis' a wonderful place and I, for one, am monogamous. I also use the Zerex.

Yea... several... including theDieselstop.com mainly... And Benzworld... just to name a couple.
Also I collect build and shoot firearms of various types. Now you want to get a similar thing going you just ask what caliber is best! Ho BoY! Also build old Vintage Scooters (Vespa).... just ask them what 2 stroke oil is the best and there ya go! Off to the races! |
