What is a starter ring?

From a CL ad
"New starter, ran until flywheel starter ring went out, needs new starter ring"

Does this mean the car wont' start right now?

Your mechanic could be a little more explicit, but when the starter ring is out, it usually means that enough teeth are missing from the ring that goes around the flywheel that the starter can't get a hold of it to effectively start the engine. The starter ring is usually "heat shrunk" to the flywheel, but on a vehicle with an automatic transmission, the gear might be made into the three spoke wheel that the converter attaches to, which serves also as the flywheel. But in either case, the transmission has to be removed to repair or replace the starter ring. If yours is bad, it makes starting the car almost impossible.

I found a convertable in really great condition for $2K
but needs a new starter ring.

Ginny, I think that is the way to look at it. Parts are not much, matter of fact I have one from a 617 which you could have very cheap. I don't know if the ring or flywheel from the 617 is the same, but quite possible it is. In any case, they are easy to come by for the gas engines also. So, basically, you have a horse job of R and R the transmission. Any jerkwater shop looking for work should be able to do it, just takes time and elbow grease. I have allowed $1200.00 for the job, but you might be able to get it done for 750? Just have to look around, because I don't think you are going to do it. You might also look at the car and see if it will start. Maybe it will with a bit of fussing, making a heck of a racket with the starter gear jumping on the broken or worn out ring gear. Can't hurt any more then that. Maybe the starter will just whiz up and away whirr and never catch. In any case, even if it is just occasionally, it will have to be replaced.

You might be able to put a socket and breaker bar on the crank and manually turn the flywheel to a spot that there are enough teeth to let the stater engage.

You didn`t say what model car you are talking about. Iam going to asszoom it is a Diesel most likely.

Why not just get a flywheel off one at a Pick N Pull and just have it matched ballanced like when doing a 4 spd swap, and changing the flex
plate with the flywheel.
Might be cheaper than having a new ring gear heated and shrunk to fit.

How many miles is on this engine and or what kind of obuse has been done
to other things under the valve cover? seems strange the ring gear would
be in bad shape,
when I pulled my engine with 331000 miles, it was in good shape, and the
PNP engine I bought with 225000 last week looks good.

Dry air, 33% humidity in the summer, 300+ sunshiny days per year.

Gotta have a convertible. Will prolly get rid of the FL (82 300D)car
in order to get a rag top.

I want to make it (82) Tom's Daily driver.
The only other cars that could go are the 78 and there is no way I'm going to sell that car. First MB, in fabulous condition. The other is the greasecar that gets about 100 miles per gallon (with the WVO added in). We haven't yet attached ourself to the 82. After I start working on it that will change.
Besides, it won't happen. I won't end up with a gasser.

Thanks for posting the link, nice looking SL. HMMM, not going to find many
parts in PNP for one of these.

Looks like if you do buy this you will end up with a gasser . I think a 617 will fit under the hood.
