Dangers of VO

So I have a plastic 50gallon barrel full of WVO on my side yard and this info Scares me.

http://books.google.com/books?id=Yu7XRm3T1YMC&pg=PA182&lpg=PA182&dq=ignition+temperature+of+vegetable+oil&source=web&ots=aLrd6OQKlx&sig=ECij2yulZTGSkteVQ-X5s8IPUK4&hl=en

Anyone else consider the fact that if a match or cigaret, or any other soucre surface temperature over 444F, were thrown into this barrel it would blow up? Or Am I being to cautious? Any thoughts?

WVO is not that explosive. You would have to get it really hot first. This is one of the reasons that companies like Lovecraft Biofuels have put so many classic Mercedes Benz's into wrecking yards, starting them on cold WVO!

You throw a match into a barrel of VO, and it will extinguish the match.

you take an oxy-acetylene torch and flame it into a vat of VO, and you will get a puddle, then the surface of the vo will light... to explode it would require a 500gallon barrel wit only 55 gallons of vo in it, and direct sunlight exposure for long enough to heat the oil over 400F, then put in some C4...
I would not worry about a barrel of oil...

If by some chance you start a fire somewhere on your lawn, dump that WVO on it. It will put it right out.

Unless you store your VO in a pottery kiln in a sealed container with high vapor pressure you'll be fine.

The SR71 used jet fuel that would extinguish a burning match and was used as coolant for the mechanicals.

Yeah if it was mixed with gasoline.

My brothers an HVAC engineer and was talking about house fire scenarios. Your house catches on fire the it would explode. I think a little over zealous.

The article I posted makes it sound very dangerous.

I did throw a match in a cup of vo and t went out. Soaked the match and it did burn awhile. I could use this stuff for camp fires then?

if you mix it with some sawdust/wood shavings and allow it to soak in,works great as a fire starter for campfires.
Also, remember they weld diesel fuel tanks FULL.Or as full as possible.reduces vapor buildup, thus reducing explosive likeliness

It would not "blow up" because the air/fuel ratio inside the barrel is too low to do more than ignite the surface vapors.

I've also heard that a full gas tank is less dangerous than one nearly empty.

A tank full of liquid gasoline is much safer, than a tank nearly empty of gasoline and full of explosive fumes.

Well lets just say My neighbors close quarters house caught on fire and a burning piece of lumber fell on the barrel spilling it on the ground. The fire could turn much more disastrous then with out right? The fire department might ask "why the hell did you have 50 gallons of oil?" Or would this not even happen? And are these hypothetical answers or has anyone had a piece of burning lumber spill their oil?

I think the fire risk would be lower than a stack of four unmounted tires sitting beside the building. Yes if the tires or oil gets hot enough then it will burn. But one barrel of VO is not much of a risk. My old lumber pile beside the garage is probably worse

Dude, its just vegetable oil. it doesn't even have vapor if a tree catches on fire and falls on it the most that will happen is the tree burns a little longer.
