WDMBD to the OM617.952 in 83?

What did Mercedes Benz do to the 617 turbo diesel to change the specification and up the HP by two and MPH top by 5mph?

I see this slight change listed as happening in 9/83 but don't know what they did to achieve it.

somewhere along about then they changed the way the turbo mounted I believe, perhaps that has something to do with it.

I think they revised the cam shaft design.

Only the '85 Cali has a different turbo mount I think.

I thought the camshaft change happened in 1980 when HP went up to 120.

Maybe they just became better liars in 1983?

To be honest I wondered if it was just a myth... Or some sort of "re-rating".

I think the turbo engine (617.950) started at 120 HP and was uprated to 125 with the new cam in the 617.952

No, it was 110 in 1978 and 79, then they hardened and messed with the cam to get it to 120 (which my 80 W116 has). They did something else to get it to 123 (which my 83 300D has) and then I think to 125 by 1985, but what I dunno.

Most mentions I can find show it going from 123 to 125 exactly at 9/83 for some reason. Anything significant about September?

August or September is usually the beginning of production for the next model year, so we are probably looking at 1984 and 1985 vehicles having this slightly higher HP rating. There were a number of subtle interior changes that also happened on the 84's & 85's, 2 more HP may have been part of the list.

Yes... they are in US terms about when new production would begin. More like August most times for US production resume. But didn't think MB would work in a production change on our terms. Oddly placed for them I would think.

Well our 1983 has a build date of either Aug or Sept of 1982 and it has always been registered as an '83. In fact the vin sequence has a 'D' in the 10th spot designating 1983 as the model year.

Yea... its hard to tell if they meant exactly it was changed at exactly 9/83 or what. I would have to assume they really mean thats when the change occurred though. Not when something was officially titled or something like that. The references point to a date of change.

There's a code on the build sheet that modifies the model year. It is code 80* and it states" Change of year of model, last figure shows new model year" the *would be the year For example my 84 300D has an 804 code which modifies the model year to 1984 even though it was built in 1983.
Perhaps this was a code used only used on US models?
