Went today and started the car up. Started immediately on first try, idles well. Engine will not race. Filter is dirty. 240k. While running will "tea kettle rattle" the oil filler cap. Wheels are scarred from curbs, but fixable.

Offset is ET 11 as stated above. good call.

Going to make an offer.

No, the cinder block and jack method suggested would have been a steal. :D

Having said that, there is a ZERO percent chance that I would ever stop at that house, in that neighborhood and ask about it. I can't explain how rough the area is. {even hookers work about a half mile of that sidewalk}
Nice little 240, and pretty clean for the most part.....:(

Dude for a 5 speed I would drive it back from Iraq if I had to.

is the 240d the only model with the std tranny that we can use on our 617's

bgkast 04-21-2008 03:30 PM

No, some Gassers have one that will work too. Look at the starter location, if it is on the Right it should work.

Johnhef 04-21-2008 06:27 PM

some euro 300D's had both the 4 and 5 speed ones as well.

Do not hijack the tale of the Good Ship Hooptie! :)

Went tonight and bought the 300SD for 400.00. The seller left and I changed out the fuel filters and started the car. If I throttled the car at the rack on the engine it revved up fine. Using the pedal it wouldn't rev at all. My brother-in-law was watching the rack when I was using the pedal and noticed the 10mm bolt holding the center rack coming out of the fake firewall was not tightly connected to the engine rack. Tightened the bolt and everything worked correctly.

Needed a bit of transmission fluid and had a bit of a scare because the brake master cylinder was empty(leaky wheel cylinder seal).

I slapped some insurance on it and drove the GOOD SHIP HOOPTIE home.

I'll post some more pictures if anyone is interested.

126's are freakin' huge compared to a 123. At least in the rain, in the dark, with bad tires, expired tags and sticker and no real brakes to speak of.

You should go to church and ask for forgivness for stealing that car (joke). I am jealous, congratulations and yes I would like to see more pictures of your new purchase.

Sounds like a real buy. The wheels are worth that alone!

Boardmonger 04-21-2008 11:57 PM

Nice score there! The r9's are pretty nice wheels, but I'm always debating myself on how well they actually fit the w123 (or w126). I'd say they are out of place on the 126, but occasionally look good on the 123. Its all about the angle, because those flat faces can look a bit wierd.

I got my ronals from the junkyard, in about the same condition. I cleaned them up decently well and painted them about 2 years back. They are holding up alright, not great, but with some wider tires, they do give quite a bit more grip.

On the w123 run 205-55 16's up from and 225-50 16s in the rear. 225 will rub the front, and with a 55 profile you are going to have to roll the fenders. I learned that the hard way.

ImBroke 04-22-2008 09:37 AM

Congrats on the score!!!!!

JHogan 04-22-2008 12:04 PM

Boardmonger, Thanks for the heads up on tire size. The wheels have very bad 205/50 16's now and considering the ET 11 offset I planned on a different size for the F & R. I would like to find the correct AMG wheels(?) with what looks like different front and rear offset but suspect they are made of unobtanium. You saved me some tire test fitting, I appreciate it. I'm planning on rolling the fronts and hopefully if space permits lowering the car a bit to close up the fenderwell gap.

I'm going to trail fit tonight.

Sweet! 50 profiles look too small if your car isn't lowered. Even stock at an angle, 55 looks a little smallish.

Your speedo will be 3 MPH fast with 50s in the rear.

I know about the Penta's. They are tough to get, and when they are around, they go for big bucks. Last 2 sets on ebay.de went for 1000 and 1100 euros!
