85 617 engine/ tranny removal tricks?

Hi all- I am pulling a 617 out of an 85 300D, and into another 85 300D.

got both cars prepped today. just wondering if anyone has some sage words of wisdom.

radiators and oil coolers are out.

bottom engine mount bolts are out. bottom bolts for engine shocks removed.

all wring, fuel and vac lines unhooked.

basically the tranny mounts and linkages are left. I am thinking drop the tranny x member, and then that will help gain access to the tranny linkage/wiring.

and dropping the drivelines. do they come all the way out? or can you just unbolt the flexdisc? the parts car I will be removing it anyways.

how about the exhaust- all the way out?

what about the entirely different emissions/EGR systems on this year car? how much is needed, and what can be eliminated? there seems to be 3x more vac lines than my 84.

and who needs parts?? I will have a car sitting in the yard , getting picked over. but it cant stay long, so speak up.

I'll post up in classifieds, too.

If it is a parts car, I would get a sawzall and cut the top radiator support so you can slide the engine out freely. On the car receiving the motor, you should consider jacking up the rear end as high as possible to help the the engine and trans in.

Yes along with unbolting the driveshaft carrier bearing will give you more clearance.

You can just unbolt at the flex disk.

Just unbolt at the turbo and transmission mount.

You can eliminate the EGR/AVR portions of it, but the tranny stuff leave in place.

be sure to disconnect the oil line to the oil gauge.
the spedo cable

If you are going to remove the transmission after you pull it, be sure to remove the torque converter bolts while the engine is still in the car.

How did this swap go?

what were some obstacles?\

how did you clear the tail of the trans when removing the unit?

I pulled my engine and trans as a unit. then when I removed the trans I had to remove the torque converter bolts. the problem I had was everything was hanging on the engine hoist swinging around.

so I set the eng on the back of my pick up, tied the tail shaft to the hoist, got my wife to hold a large screwdriver against the flywheel to keep everything from turning when I loosened the bolts.

much easier to do it under the car with everything connected.

also before I disconnected the trans Xmember, I used a small floor jack with a piece of plywood against the transmission oil pan. then as I lifted the engine and tilted it, I would lower the center jack. maybe it wasn`t necessary, but worked for me.

on my engine lilter, I cut off that stupid little crank and welded one of those long 3/4in nuts. then used my 1/2in ratchet to tilt the eng. makes it much easie. maybe even an impact would speed it up.

I second the floor jack under the trans. This way it just slides toward the front of the car on rollers. Charmalu, your wifes cool
