is anyone excessive oil usage with their GL

Ever since I bought my Deisel GL I've had to add one to two quarts of oil after about 8,000 miles. I now have 70,000 miles on it and after the last service it only went 6000 miles before I Had to add oil. There are no signs of leaks or smoke. Is this normal? The dealer has no answers.

Oil consumption during engine break-in is normal, but by 70,000miles its not.

What oil are you using, how long did you drive before changing the oil the first time and did you follow the break-in steps in the owners manual?

I will have to check my book for exact mileage but I have followed the recommended service times in the manuel (and service manager) and use the oil the service manager told me to get.

Probably a bent rod if you have 70,000 miles

I'm beginning to believe that Mercedes has decided to make cars, especially diesel cars that go 50,000 miles, long enough to get out of warranty. They don't build cars to go 1,000,000 miles anymore. Its now 55,000 miles and time to go buy a new one. Or they believe that if you are a real Mercedes owner, if your motor starts to smoke and drink oil, you can tell the Service Department to replace that motor with a new one and send you the bill.

Oil Consumption

Needing a quart after 6000 miles doesn't sound like high consumption to me ....

On the other hand, I change it before that.

I know, I'm used to changing mine at 5,000 and adding one quart in between some changes due to leakage and combustion combined.

My 18 year old 602 with 113k doesn't use that much. I have about 5k on 5W40 Mobil 1, and the level has barely dropped at all.

That you had better do, as use of any oil other than 229.51--which means Mobil 1 ESP 5W-40--will poison your particulate filter.

How many diesels are you basing these outlandish claims on? What's your sample size?
