Sunroof problems...
Lately my interior and I have been getting soaked due to the stuck sunroof. I think its in the worst position, right before it goes up, so it's still down from when you open it.
Every time I stop in the rain....(cold water), (angry) My benz mech. tried turning the nut in the trunk with no success. I think either the belt is worn or the bolt is. Ready to start fixing up interior, but not if it's going to get soaked. Thanks for everything! |

Please use search feature - many posts on this topic
Hey
Sorry to hear of your problems. This topic has been extensively covered both on the diesel and some of the other forums on this site. If you use the search feature you'll find a ton of information on the topic. Please read it before messing around with the system as it's got lots of parts and some of them are expensive/hard to find. Good luck - RL |

sorry...
87 300SDL, I've had advice given to me about turning the nut in the trunk, but it doesn't work. The sunroof is right before it goes up and closes. Whoever had it before me was lazy and left it down for who knows how long...
I tried wedging the back of the sunroof inside, but started tearing my headliner. I really need to know how to go about this... ANY help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thank You! |

If you cannot find the proper thread you will need to buy what manual is needed to fix the roof or pay some one else to do it.
In the mean time a good quality Duct Tape might prevent your expensive interior from getting ruined.

Just pop off the sunroof panel and push the up on the front of it and close it with your hands. I have my headliner stripped out and removed the sunroof motor and cable (stripped motor gear) and just open and close the sunroof myself. Its temporary but it works. My guess is that if the nut in the trunk wont open or close the sunroof you have a stripped gear too.

look at the manual, there is a an adjustment that sets the travel limit.
There is also a clutch on the transmission, if loose, the cable can slip. The nut is just a last resort to open/close the sunroof. Have you tried tapping the tilt feature? Push up momentarily on the sunroof switch and see if that will close it. Jim

Tilt function does nothing...
My sunroof is stuck right before it goes up to close. So technically it's still open, because it's still down and open... right??? What should I try and do here??? |

RTFM!!
I believe you pull the (white) knob out on the sunroof drive, that disengages the motor, then turn the nut to open/close the sunroof. If the "mechanic" has already broken the plastic 17mm nut off of the drive, you can turn the smaller metal nut inside, or use vise-grips.

I had a similar problem with my 79 300d. The p/o had gooped silicone all over the outside to seal it (indicating a new seal is in order). When I finally removed the mess, the rear portion of the sunroof dropped in and I couldn't get it close again. So I took it all apart. It was easy. I found that many of the small metal parts that keep the roof on track were bent up, and the little plastic feet/bushing things were pretty well beat. I straightened up the bent parts and put it all back together with a little grease on the tracks, manipulated the salvaged feet/bushing things back in their place, and now it closes and opens fine.

If that's the case, I'd start by disconnecting the cable from the transport bridge, then push the roof into the closed position. That way you won't get rain in the car, and you can focus on repairing the problem. I don't think the nut will always work in closing the sunroof. If you're problem is a broken cable or broken lifts arms, the all that's going to move the roof is your hands. Does the roof move at all when you try to close it? If not, can you at least hear the motor "trying"? These things can help determine if it's a motor problem, clutch problem, adjustment problem, cable problem, lift arm problem, etc.

my. Guess is that yours is much different than mine because its ten years older or so, but I have a lazy sunroof that I blame on the motor for ive changed out the cable. It seizes right before it shuts I toggle the switch back and foreth and press forward on the cross beam of the sunroof its a son of agun but after some reasoning it will shut. Once you've taken your system apart and put everything back together, don't forget to lube your cable and grease your tracks and not with heavy duty bearing grease. White grease from and parts shop works. Hope it helps.

I can only move the sunroof with my hands. The motor is whining or at least trying to work, with no movement at all.

In my SD, the little ring gear in the motor gearbox had shattered, and caused this same issue. The motor would run, but the roof would not move.
In my SEC, I haven't opened the gearbox yet, but it exibits the same behaviour. With the sunroof liner removed, I found that the metal bracket that attaches the sunroof drive cable had come loose, but the cable does not move even when the motor is actuated. As a temp fix on the SEC, I just pushed forward on the transport bar (the piece of the sunroof where the cable attaches) and the sunroof popped up into place.
