have you ever successfully greased the ball joint?

My first attempt, has ended in putting a hole through the rubber boot, so I guess I will be replacing that ball joint some time soon.. but then it was squeeking something aweful... and if i had taken it to a garage, they would have replaced it as well, so I tell myself.. If you were ever successful, in doing so, how did you do it? I pried up one edge, and then got the grease needle in too far... (after not getting it in far enough the first two attempts..)

Just squirting some grease under the boot is not really going to get the grease where it needs to go. As a temporary solution, I would consider using some gear oil instead.

If it squeaks, it's probably tight. The syringe idea might work if the hole isn't too big.

The syringe on a grease-gun with high-pressure / CV joint grease has worked on a couple of mine that creaked but did not have play. Once you inflate the boot a bit with the grease, massage it in.

Yes, a product by Wurth called HHS 2000. Spray can with wand. Sprays as a liquid, hardens to a grease in a few minutes.

I've used it on a ball joint. It works. But you need to change that ball joint ASAP.

Wurth is expensive and hard to find. For professional shops.

If the boot is intact and the joint not loose there is no reason not to squirt grease in with a needle fitting on the grease gun. I have done it many times and gotten extra years out of the ball joints. It is often one of the first things I do to a newly aquired old benz.

I used to inject oil into the ball-joint boots on a friend's 300E. The ball-joints would stay quiet for 6 months or so. I eventually wound up replacing them anyway. The right ball-joint on my newly-acquired 300TD moans while turning. I may have to try the oil-injection.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Grease.

A high-pressure lube (such as CV-Joint grease) contains MoS2, which will coat the metal and stay there, platelets in the mineral slip over each other and lower the friction, different than oil.

Thanks for your help, I might have better luck next time.. at the least I will know more about what I am trying to do and how to do it.

I've got a few syringes that I have filled with various oil weights and types.
Great for injecting lubricant into ball joints.

Keeps 'em quiet. For a while.....

You can buy the little needle thing with a zirc on the other end and use your grease gun, ... beats trying to push it into a hypodermic needle.
