Help! W123 shifting trouble
Ok, I tried to search the forum for help with this problem, but nothing found (yet).
'85 300D having trouble with shifting. After I press the pedal down to activate kick down, the engine revs and just sits there with no increase of speed and no upshift. If I "mess" with the pedal a bit, it will shift up and start to accelerate. That was the first indication that something was wrong. Now, on top of this, I noticed that at freeway speeds of about 60 mph I can feel the engine hesitating like it's starving for fuel. At this point I cannot accelerate anywhere past 60 mph. If I come upon a climb, the speed just drops. My first thought, after the hesitation, was that maybe I have a fuel filter or strainer problem. But, if the kick down switch raises the RPM's, I thought maybe not. Even so, why would the trans be shifting (or not) like it is? Has anyone had something like this happen? I don't know if the shifting and the hestiation are related, or just coincidental. How do you suppose I start to troubleshoot? I thank you, in advance, for any help in this matter. Ken

Ok, I'm surprised! No one has any insight on this problem? I thought that someone would have replied by now.

Flyin,
Your answer is in your signature line :-) If you have been running bio for 3k you probably have a fuel strainer or filter issue. Thats causing the hesitation. Try fixing that and then go from there. (Bio cleans out all of the petro diesel sludge from the last 25 years and sends it up your fuel lines) A temporary fix for a clogged fuel strainer is to swap the fuel send and return lines for a minute. This will blow some of the crap off the fuel strainer. But, the problems may come back. In that case you'll need to clean the strainer, or even the whole tank. I am doing this right now before switching to bio - Im pulling the tank and having it steam cleaned. Good luck, dd

I changed the primary and pre-filter and all shifting problems are gone. Thank you. With the way it was not shifting, I thought at first it was transmission related. Obviously, it wasn't getting enough fuel to shift. I haven't changed the fuel strainer yet, but it's on my list. I need to find a 46mm socket first!
