Could someone give me the specs on the wrenches needed for the valve adjustment on a '83 OM616? I don't really want to drop $80 for a set of wrenches that are only going to be used maybe twice a year if I could just file them down and bend them myself.

I remember reading a good writeup on how to fabricate a set of wrenches. Do a search on "valve wrench" and I think you will find it. It was within the last year if I remember correctly. I looked briefly in the DIY articles but did not see it.

The money may seem like a pain, but if you do have (or have access to) the offset wrenches the job is a bigger pain.

I bought a couple of 14 mm at autozone for about $8 per. This is for my 84 300D. I bent them by heating them with an oxy acetelene torch until cherry red and then with a vise and vice grip made the bend. The wrenches are offset, and it would have been much easier to use a straight on wrench for the job, but I bent one wrench angled right, and the other angled left. I had to grind the face to 5mm. and you should bend them so they pass each other. there are pix of wrenches for sale on ebay. That's what I used as a guide. I used them. No problem, but my back was killing me all bent over the engine. I'm much older than my car!! Also, the autozone wrenches are finished in a polished chrome. Heating them to bend ruined that finish for good, but at 8 bucks each? who cares.

Might I interest you in the forum search function. I can't remember the poster but there is a at least a thread or two with explicit instructions, and even pictures.......
The proper Hazet wrenches aren't all that expensive, and they work so very well that it is $$$ well spent. Also, they will pretty much always be worth what you paid for them should you ever want the $$$ back.

The cost of the wrenchs seems like a lot but but they retain there value and I have see used sets go for almost as much as new ones.

The wrenches are not needed. I've done tons of valve adjustments on 616 and 617s and never used the wrenches. The wrenches are for sissies!

Hey! Careful what you call me, I have a set of those wrenches .

I think they are bent to clear the fuel lines, probably if the hard lines were removed straight wrenches would work.

I don`t have any trouble using the Hazet wrenches, except the last one, that is always a bugger to do.

I don`t have the third wrench, so far haven`t needed it.

I bought my wrenches off e-bay along with about 5 other mb wrnches for $50 plus $ a few yrs ago.
Last night an auction ended for all three wrenches, new never used. $7.16 and $12.95 ship. I was watching them all week, had an hour to go, and got side tracked . I hope the idiot enjoys my wrenches.

I searched real quick and didn't find anything about what size the wrenches were. So if I remove the hard lines I should be able to adjust them without an offset pair?

They are 14MM. I have been able to adjust them fine with the hard lines in place using standard wrenches.

This is a Mercedes-Benz, $80 for a set of tools is nothing when you start looking at the bigger special tools required for these cars. Find out how much your local MB indy will charge to adjust valves, more than likely it'll be over $80. Those wrenches will have paid for themselves right after the first adjustment.
