Window regulators halfway out
I have my rear window mechanisms half way out. All the nuts, bolts, screws and wires have been disconnected, but I can't get the damn thing out of the door. There is a metal rod running across the inside of the door that seems t be in the way. I guess this would be the side door reinforcement the US DOT requires.
How do I get the motor and regulator out of there? I can't see anything else that can be removed or disassembled to make the unit small enough to get through the openning.

Had same problem
I had the same problem on a 1981 300SD. Turns out that I had to either remove (or unscrew one end and move over) the metal brace -runs north south - near the back of the door. Seems like the brace is below and supports the small triangular window which shares a common channel with the rear up/down window. Still hard to get the regulator out but it will come out with work.

You may need to power the motor and move it to a different position to remove it through the opening.

There's a spring on the regulator that expands it when all the bolts are out. Try to compress it back in and maybe you can get it out.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. If I haven't figured it out before tomorrow morning, we can have a "project" for the GTG tomorrow! Woohoo!
If somebody who knows what they're doing can just watch me and give me a little guidance on one of them, I should be good. Thanks for the help!

Here's what I learned yesterday.
You have to lower the window to disconnect the regulator from it. Then the widon has to be pushed back up out of the way. Next, you have to disconnect the upper and lower screws holding the window track inside the door. Once that is loose, you can manuver the regulator and motor out of the door and put the new one in. Sorry I don't have pictures of this, but thatnks to ImBroke and JohnHef for helping/showing me how to do this.
