Vent Holes behind rear windows on 300D and 300TD's?

While trying to isolate leaks on the rear windows of my 84 300TD wagon, I noticed 2 vent holes, located behind the rear window, hidden in the rear of the drip rail/gutter. While looking at 300D sedans, I noticed them as well.

First of all, what are these for? Secondly, where do these drain out of the car? It seems that rain from the drip rails would just pour right into the things and soak the car if they didn't drain somewhere outside of the vehicle.

They let air out of the cabin for flow through ventilation. I am not sure where they drain, but it won't be into the passenger compartment. If you have water problems look first at the windshield and rear screen gasket. I always clean and caulk them with black silicone when I first get a new old benz.

There is a way for water to come in through the heater air intake at the base of the windshield too but I have never really understood that one.

Aren't there also tubes to drain the sun roof in there somewhere? I think one of these tends to cause rust in the rear fenders of the wagons. If someone has a picture they can post here of where these tubes are, that would be helpful to me. I probably need to clean mine out.

The rear sunroof drains exit out those vents. It's easiest to clean them by entering from the back and pushing the line into the sunroof cavity with the sunroof panel removed. I used a long wand extension on my shop vac to suck up the debris that pushed through into the cavity.

This is the best pic I could get, but at least you see the area you have to look for the end of the rubber drain hose. I used an old speedo cable to clear the drain and used the weed whacker line for the photo since it was easier to see.

Thanks, Jimmy. I remember seeing that before, but didn't know where it was.

Thanks, Chad. I think I'll go ahead and order the little plumber's snake from Harbor Freight. I have a lot of trees around the house and quite a few are pines, so I'll need to clean it often I'm sure.
