Coolant showers...

1982 300d
Hey all..
sunday I did my bi annual dieselpurge and near the end i got surprised by a small crack that formed in my expansion tank spraying me, the engine and the world with a nice shower of coolant. Today i got a new expansion tank - simple replacement- but what is bothering me is that i keep filling it up, drive it around the block and its near empty again?! did this 3 or 4 times and still it just want to rest at about the bottom third at best. I cant see it comming out anywhere and my oil still looks like it always had, black as night. 2 things to note, 1)my new cap is rated @ 120 not 140 like the old one, and 2) the first drive around the block got it hot enough to blow said cap and spit out some steam and very little coolant. After that it had been cool/warm to the touch. My thermostat guage jumps wildly with my fuel guage so it is no help at all, but I have had the system checked a few months ago and was told it was running at 90-95c. sorry for the lengthy post....any help is greatly appriciated

Air in the system. Fill the system thru the top radiator hose with the car pointed nose uphill. Run the engine for a while with the heater running full blast.
