ZF pump front seal

I've searched but could not find an answer. Has anyone removed and replaced just the front seal on this pump without using the MB tool? What did you use and how difficult was it to remove the seal with the shaft in place?

Thanks for any advice.

John

Just resealed my ZF pump - including the shaft seal; after removing the pulley, gently punch thru the left and right sides of old shaft seal with a small screw driver, then gently pry the seal out.

Hardest part for me was removing the pulley. Gentle taps with a rubber hammer didn't work. So I adapted a Powerbuilt PS Pulley Puller (#648460) by filing down the arms to fit the groove on the pulley, it worked a charm.

Word of caution, if you decide to reseal the pump using the 'O' ring kit, be careful when replacing the backing plate. I miss-aligned the big circular clip that holds the backing plate. It dumped all the fluid out the back of the pump while I was trying to bleed the system. Removed the pump, resealed the backing plate properly and everything was OK. No harm done other than a mess to clear up and the loss of 1quart of MB PS fluid.

Neal;

Did you remove the front seal with the shaft in place? I just rebuilt the ZF pump on my 300SD, but took the shaft out before prying the seal out with a screwdriver.

For some reason I was sent two front seals with the kit I had ordered for the 300SD. Now I noticed my 240D pump is leaking at the front seal and I don't want to take it apart if I don't have to.

Thanks.

John

Yes, I left the shaft in place. Pierced thru the seal on each side of the shaft, and pried it loose. Go gently when piercing the seal to avoid scratching the pump housing.

Thanks Neil. I will be replacing it this weekend.
