1983 300SD Engine Removal
I now have another core plug pouring water and it is the one between the engine and the transmission. I need to pull the engine and I was wondering if there are any things I need to look out for. I plan on just removing the engine and just support the transmission in place. I assume that the flywheel is bolted to the converter and other than the block bolts that should seperate the trans and engine. I just don't want to run into anything unexpected and try my best to be prepared.
Thanks for the help. Rodney |

I was wondering just how difficult a job removing my engine would be, too. I've never even considered doing something like that before, but maybe t's not as diffcult as I thought.

Seems like more work to pull just the engine only. I pulled mine last July, but pulled the trans with it. If you do it that way, be sure to remove the 6 torque converter bolts while it is still in the car.
I usel an engine tilter because it has to come out @ a 45deg angle, but not all that bad of a job. Charlie ☺

Thanks for the replies. I did not see a need to remove the transmission and just thought it would be easier to just leave it there. Is there a problem with just removing the engine? I figured that with the transmission left in the car that you would not have to tilt the engine so much and it would pretty much just come straight up and out. I plan to start on this next weekend and will study up all I can until then.
Thanks, Rodney |

How long would something like this take? or is that too loaded a question?

I've taken just then engine out w/o the trans before. You just have to use a bunch of extentions (4 feet?) to get over the top of the transmission from the tail to reach the upper bellhousing bolts. You'll have to unbolt the rear transmission mount to do this. You can pull the engine with the torque converter intact. One note, be sure to remove the plastic pin located on the driver side transmission casing, it keeps the torque converter from falling out of the transmission and make sure you have space in front of the motor to have it go forward so the torque convert can clear.
Or you can remove the engine w/o the torque converter as stated above. You'll eventually have to remove the torque converter to install the motor because there is no way to install it into the transmission properly with it on.
