aftermarket speedo options

Has anyone got ANY information on aftermarket Speedometers that are relatively reasonable in cost? My speedometer on my 83 240d is quite noisy and the needle lurches -- I assume it needs new gears -- the local speed shop wants $150 just to eval ((*&^%). I don't mind an aftermarket speedo, I just cant seem to find anything that fits. I would even be willing to go electronic, but can't find a sending unit to bolt to the manual tranny. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Jeez, just post in the parts forum asking for a speedo for the correct application of car. {year, model, rear end ratio, etc......}
You can find one pretty easily and fairly cheaply, and it won't look stupid....

I don`t know how far you are from Claremore, Ok. but try www.okiebenz.com.

there are some DIY repairs in the DIY section.

If you change the spedo, they are matched to the rear drive ratio, not the trans.

Tranny type does not matter. All that matters is that its a W123 with a 3.69 rear end.

Post in the parts section, you should be able to get a good used one for less than half of that shops $150 inspection fee.

I just sent mine off to Rick Borth at www.speedometer.com --- filled out the form on the website; sent it out last Wednesday, got it back this Wednessday --- installed it Wednesday night. Works GREAT.

Replaced 3 gears, lube, bench tested.

Repair $125 (just like estimate said)
Shipping 9.44
Handling 4.00
Total 138.44 plus what it cost me to send it to him.

So, for the less than your shop wants to evaluate it....you could probably have yours repaired and have the original speedometer in your car.
