More fun than rebuilding a Diesel--rebuilding a 40 year old jack!

I want so bad to rebuild an engine or a car, but everything costs so much money and there are no small 3 cylinder Diesels. So this spring, instead of the annual ritual of towing a car home, I looked around my garage for projects. I found this battered neglected HeinWener Jack I bought off Craigs' List and I am making it "New" out of the Box. You couldn't buy a jack like this today.

The jack had three coats of paint on it.

Stripping it bare...

Rebuilding the innards....

I know I am kind of wierd

I know I am kind of wierd. Who would restore a 40 year old jack and make it look like it was brand new again. I even am getting replacement wheels made for the rear. Maybe I will restore a toilet or a hairdryer next.

It keeps you out of trouble and off the streets and is better than watching TV and watching your belly grow.
I looked at the thread as I wanted to see if you changed the inards of the hydraulic jack.
My Father gave me his old American made floor jack. When I went to use it I found that it leaked off oil too much to be safe.
I had no time to change the seals and stuff even if I knew where to get them. I emptied what was left of the jack oil out of the jack and replaced the thin jack oil with 90wt trans and differential lube. It still seeps a little but plenty safe enough to jack the car up and get the jack stands under it.

you aren't weird! check out my nearly 40 year old radial arm saw! still has all its paper work, and extras like a disc sander attachment.

I got her for free! I just finished making the table and, took her apart and lubed everything up. works great! I did a little painting when i had her apart, the top of the arm is now red. I haven't take more pics.

I love old tools! they are made better then new ones, and most of the time even if they are old, they are still better then a new tool. I love your jack! looks awesome!

I want to find an old drill press.

I think the newest wood working large power tool that I have is now 52 years old but my favorites are older than that. My lath is from the early 1940s and my drill press is from 1952 and I have a bench top band saw that I can't find anyone who can date it but it has a name on it that says Dura. I have rebuilt all of these with new bearings and cleaned up the motors and installed new bearings in two of them. The third motor turned out to have little babbitt bearings in it that are really cool.
I LIKE OLD TOOLS

I found a vintage air compressor for free on CL that I was going to restore, but somebody got to it first.
