Well, the SDL broke...again

My wife was driving, she said there was a loss of power, and lots of white smoke out of the back. She limped it to a gas station where I met her. I initially thought it was the head gasket. The car started right up...with the usual smoke. I had her rev it a few times, there was white smoke after she let off the accelerator. After a few times, it puked out a bunch of oil out of the tailpipe. That makes me think the turbo, but where would the white smoke come from? I didn't see anything new leaking in the engine compartment.

What do you think?

White smoke = antifreeze You are not leaking it you are burning it.

check the oil to see if it is a chocolate milk like colour as well as check the coolant for signs of oil in it.

like TX said.. white smoke is a sign of coolant getting into the cylinders....

The white smoke can be coolant, fuel, or oil.

One whiff of the exhaust will tell you which one it is.

Nobody can offer any intelligent responses without determining which fluid is being consumed.

I couldn't tell which fluid it was (oil or fuel). It only did smoke when she let off the accelerator. I am pretty sure it wasn't coolant, I couldn't smell that nasty, rotten smell of coolant.

I have been dealing with a pretty big blow-by problem, and have told it was probably the rings. A buddy of mine here also said this could also be the rings. The next step of engine failure, so to speak. Any thoughts?

If it's not coolant, the most likely culprit of the two remaining fluids is oil.

If the smoke appears under trailing throttle conditions with high crankcase pressure and low cylinder pressures, the most likely culprit is a failed head gasket and a considerable amount of oil is entering the #1 cylinder via the blown gasket. It's a common failure point on these engines.

BTW, coolant doesn't have a "nasty rotten smell". It's got a sweet smell that's unmistakable. You do have glycol in the engine.......correct?

Thanks for the info. I have always thought of coolant burning as frying rotting eggs. I have never seen it as that sweet. Either way, I know what it smells like, and it's not coolant.

You say glycol, I assume you are talking about coolant. I believe the green stuff is in there. I haven't messed with it since buying the car. Been too busy fixing other stuff.

Before going nuts I'd do a compression check. See if its even worth taking the head off.
