Help ID these modifications

I was looking at wikipedia and noticed an interesting photo in the OM617 entry.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3f/300SD_OM617.jpg

Look closely...

The air filter mod is pretty cool, I have seen it before and considered doing it myself, but I am not exactly sure how to re-route the crank case ventalaton. Any one know how it's done, or have a link to a good tutorial or photos?

The Vaccum Modulators on the top of the camshaft cover are missing. Would that mean this SD has a manual trans?

Also, there is a strange brass fitting (bottom right) in between the clear tube coming off the back of the intake manifold, and the clear tube going to the pump. What is that all about? I cleaned the bolt that holds the banjo onto the back of the intake on my car and it really helped performance, but I never thought to do anything with that module that the clear tube connects to and it look like he replaced his. Any ideas?

this is sirnik84's car. It is located about 15 miles from me.

The brass fitting is for a propane injection system that he never set up and supplies the boost gauge. It does nothing. The crankcase ventilation is either the 240d oil seperator, or one that he knocked out of air filter box. Its an 84' car so it does not have the trans modulator. You dont need it any way, its all emmisions and egr related. If you want to know how to setup your tranny you only need vacuum to the trans modulator valve and then to the tranny. Ask if you are confused.

The air filter is just a cold air intake off the turbo.

I think all of the above is correct, ive seen his car in a more advanced state.

Now he has an air air intercooler, w115 intake, clocked turbo ect ect. He also has a bunch of gauges too.

Thanks for the info, that's sweet. I'd love to see some good photos of some of the performance mods (intercoolers, turbo mods, boost and EGT/pyrometer gauges, etc) people are doing to the OM617. I read about them, but I have not seen a lot of photos.

I would like to know more about the trans set up. I hate those two little white plastic vaccum modulators, how can I get rid of them? Don't they have something to do with the turbo too?

Thanks, I just went out and did that to my 1984 300TD and it shifts wonderfully smooth.

Thanks for the information.

That is a hot air intake, not good for performance. Its actually a downgrade from the stock cold air intake.

What is the best way to re plumb the air intake to get a good unobstructed flow of cold air from outside the engine compartment?

Use the stock air filter setup.

I have ridden and driven in that 300SD, and its pretty peppy in its current setup.... I hang out with the owner on a weekendly basis...

It smoked my G500 from a dead stop...

I have tons of pics of that beast, but they are all on my memory card for my digi cam, and my mac has no memory card slot. A few mods that I know of are the gauge pods, intercooler, air intake, 240D oil seperator, propane plumbing, non AVR turbo, pyrometer, boost gauge, suspension upgrade, motor swap, and this summer, possibly a 4 speed swap.

I think he also has a NA 617 intake manifold on it to accomidate the intercooler setup.

Use the stock air box eh?

I hate the looks of that thing, but I'm not in it for the looks, so I guess I'll leave the damn thing alone.

I just wish the cord on my digital thermometer was longer, I'd like to use it while running down the road to monitor intake temp on the stock set up, then maybe one of you guys with the moded intake could test yours.

I'm going more for economy than speed.

As for the vaccum mods, I took my vent tube off and now the car really shifts smoothly, is that vent tube really inportant or am I damaging my vaccum pump/system? In other words, was that rough shifting a symptom of a bigger vaccum problem?

It was shifting hard from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 then a really rough down shift from 2 to 1. Now it is shifting very smoothly accross the board. I already have the vaccum connection to the central locking system because there is a leak in the main valve in the drivers door.
