190D per - purchase questions....

I have a line on a 1984 190D (2.2? or 2.3?) with a 5 speed near my sisters place. The seller says it runs but it has gotten noisier, and recommends not driving it too far.

I don't really know much about the diesels...but I assume the valves are adjustable..do these engines have timing chain issues? Is there anything that these cars are prone to that I should look for?

The seller is asking 1700.00 but indicated a willingness to talk for the right buyer. The car has approx 230K on it and has lived in Southern California its entire life, so no, or very little rust. It is now on its 3rd owner and comes with some records.

I think if I can get him down to 1300.00 or so, I may just buy it and think about putting the 5spd in my 1993 2.6 if the diesel is too far gone...

190d 2.2

The USA 190D is a 2.2 liter diesel engine.

The valves are hydraulic, so they do not get adjusted, they just get replaced now and then, but are usually not a problem.

The timing chain is good for about 150K miles, so you should check yours for stretch. Replace the tensioner as well.

The 601 head gasket can blow out around the first cylinder, dumping oil into the cylinder. Lots of blue smoke!

Otherwise, a tough little engine if it has been taken care of.
