Lock problems, 1985 300D Turbo

Please let me know if this question has come up before, I did a search and wasn't able to find an answer.

I'm having trouble with the lock on the drivers door. I can unlock the door with my key, but I can't lock it. I'm pretty sure it's due to a vacuum leak because when the lock stopped working the engine also started taking much longer to shut off. I also heard some hissing when I fiddled with the lock.

I can lock my car by closing the driver's door and and pushing the lock down through one of the rear doors, so I'm not completely stuck. For some reason the engine is shutting down normally again, but if I lock the doors, walk away and come back later and unlock the driver's door, the other locks don't unlock. I don't know if this is because there's a leak in the vacuum system or if the lock is broken and not releasing something it's supposed to.

I'm hesitant to start taking things apart without knowing what I'm looking for. I took apart one of the passenger doors a while back to try and identify a problem with the windows and not only did I manage to break half the little plastic snaps that hold the side in, but the threaded portion of the lock snapped off (not the plastic bit, the part it threads on to).

Does anyone know what's going on here? Is this something I can fix myself?

The driver door lock is not vacuum operated, so the problem with the lock can't be due to a vacuum leak.

The issue with the rest of the doors probably is due to a vacuum leak.

it sounds like you have multiple problems.
the key may be worn, or the tumblers in the lock may be damaged...
also, you may have vacuum issues, or a damaged vacuum actuator in the drivers door affecting the other locks.

That makes sense, so I have two probably related problems?

1. Driver's door doesn't unlock with key (but does lock)
2. Unlocking driver's door doesn't unlock other doors

It seems odd to have two independent problems in the same place, how could these be related?

Quick edit: I'm not sure it's the tumblers if it still manages to unlock, but I'm not sure what the mechanism looks like exactly

Your drivers door lock is connected to a vacumm actuator thru a valve directing vacuum to the rest of the system. It's possible that your valve is worn out along with your lock cylinder since it would appear that this part has see a lot of action!

If the valve was broken, could it be keeping the lock cylinder from rotating? This could explain both symptoms. Busted valve keeps lock cylinder pinned (only allows rotation in one direction maybe?) and isn't actuating when the door is unlocked manually?

Are there any diagrams/pictures of the mechanism? I'm worried I'll get it all apart and it'll never go back together correctly. I may simply break down and take it to a shop. I need this car to get to work, I can't afford to have it out of commission. I suppose this is the downside of only having one car, no flexibility at all in terms of working on it.

Do the "other" doors unlock after the engine is started?

I have had to repair damage caused from worn keys......if your keys are worn....replace them. That does not mean that all current or potential problems are solved, but you will at least know that this item is not part of the issue. My wonderful Margaret had keying issues. I spent $35 on two new keys and the problems are gone.

Worn keys cause worn leaves in tumblers.
