Whats up with diesel fuel these days?

My economy this year sucks, I can't think of any other way to put it.

I'm at like 400 miles and I know the light is going to come on in the next 10 or so, so just over 20mpg???

AFAIK nothing on the car has changed, except I lost 2-3 mpg. I buy it from the same station and everything.

When I went away a couple of week's I only got 23 over the road, according to my records last year I got damn near 27.

What gives?

Think it might have anything to do with your OD post something to the effect of "drifting" as you went past a cop?

Nah last year when I drove like that it only knocked me down to like 22.

This tank I have been keeping the shifts around 2k(most of the time), and the speed on the highway to under 70.

Its not ULSD either because I was running that last year and didn't notice a change, this is a recent change.

Maybe it's your station? I haven't noticed any drop in mpgs recently, just the usual slight climb in mpg as summer fuel hits. Unfortunately I do mostly about-town driving, so it's never very mind-blowing (26-27 mpg). But that was the case last year, too. Maybe try a different station (one that gets its fuel from a different supplier) for a couple tanks and see what happens.

A little OT.
Last year my lawn mower finally passed away so I bought a new one, I also bough a brand new 2 gallon gas tank for that mower.
Went to the station and bought 2 gallons of regular, after the pump stopped I looked down and the container was not full, in fact it needed “a little more” gas to fill it up.
Are you sure they are not cheating you? This is happening more & more.

Vahe

This is very true.. I have watched my gas routinely in a number of cars - knowing and documenting their mileages well. I went with cans etc.. for other projects and came up short in the cans??

I contacted the local division of weights and measures that MUST be posted on the pump.
Answering service - called again... eventually got someone with info. He was completely nonplussed. "most of the times those cans are completely innacurate.. " blah blah bulls*&^ Use a measuring cup to determine the accuracy of your can.

There are "tolerances" of acceptibility for the percent error of gas that you are being charged for on a calculated basis (ie - you are being ripped off and someone is counting the diff.)

You also have to remember that the standards for diesel allow a significant density range (and a corresponding volumetric energy content range). One reference I just found gave the energy content range as 32 to 40 megajoules per liter (MJ/L). That's a variation of about 20 percent. BTW, this has nothing to do with the difference between LSD and ULSD.

That is because the container always holds more than the advertised capacity. Look on the side of the can and you will see a line that says something like "fill to here" or "maximum fill line". The station is not cheating you, you didn't read the instructions.

The SDL went a record 590 miles and took 20.704 gallons right to the cap.

28.44 mpg is right on its usual consumption figure.

There's nothing wrong with the fuel...........only problem is my wallet.

Could it be the odometer?

Hattie,

Perhaps it could be related to a recently developed issue with your odometer.

I know that in the past three years I have had to have the odometers repaired in both my 240D and 300SD.

Nah the odometer is fine it always agrees with the GPS, speedo does as well even with slightly larger than stock wheels, go figure.

Anyway I just filled up and got 21.71mpg, which is probably 22 because I gave it a few extra shots after the pump kicked off.

The only thing that I can think of that has changed that would affect MPG's are the wider rear tires I put on. They weigh like 3-4 pounds each more than the tires they replaced, maybe a bit more unsprung weight is reducing the MPG's a bit? I had the injectors checked, they are not bad, not spraying as good as they could but the guy at the shop was like just drive it for a bit and bring them back, see if that improves them.

I'm going to try to drive even slower and see if I can't get this tank up another mpg. Driving in New Haven kills my mileage its all stop and go, and tons of idling in traffic.

There's the problem, when idling you are getting 0mpg....which will drag down your overall mpg greatly if you spend a large amount of time in stop and go/idling.

"Silver Blaze"

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

By jove, pawoSD, you've figured it out. Substitute idling for the dog
