Battery Vent

Just a tip.. Make sure you vent your battery to a point where it will not leak onto the body of the car.

Apparently I did not make the vent line long enough and its started some nasty corrosion on a bracket.

what causes batteries to vent of gasses? Heat? I should probably check the water in it as well.

The cycle of charging causes the out gassing. the bubbles are hydrogen, and sulfuric acid vapors escape and condense on the parts.

That is why you notice some warmth when you charge a battery. Over charging results in the boiling out electrolyte of the battery.

I made a sump using a pill bottle and routed the vent hose into it. Filled the bottle with some of that synthetic "cotton" that they put in pill bottles bottle, doused with battery cleaner, so that the fumes are neutralized. It seems to be effective.

Now, that is a good idea!

Motorcycles have a bigger problem with acid. If it gets on the chain, it can be very dangerous.

You can buy a small plastic bottle with nipples for the vent tube at any motorcycle shop. It should cost less than $10. They also sell nice metal cans which look much nicer for a lot more money.

What am I missing here? I've never had a battery dripping anything... some corrosion on the posts, maybe, but what exactly am I supposed to be venting?

After replacing a very rusty battery tray, I connected a piece of clear vinyl hose to the battery vent, and routed it out of the front wheel arch - see pic.

About 1 month after I bought my car the metal Hood Hinge where mounts to the body near the battery desingrated. No doubt due to the battery vapor as there is no rust in other areas.
I still have not taken the time to figure out how to repair it and prop my hood open with a broom stick.

It depends on the style of battery. Some vent through the caps. Others have a closed top with a nipple for a vent line. With the former, there is not much that can be done. With the latter, a vent hose can be routed to a "safe" location or to a sump.
