saturday Night Fever

Ok, but thats what I think of everytime I start up in the dark -

I have check the wiring diagram which points to the relay, problem is it doesnt physically point to where it is in the car

Had a quick look under the bonnet (hood) at the back bulkhead but couldnt see anything obvious -

It looks to be the replay earth but not sure where to look for it - vid is a bit poor but basically the cockpit heater control light sflash away for a while until the engine is warm -

Any ideas?

Thanks,

David

I have one but use it for voltage and temp testing only, not sure what to do with it to be 100% honest.

try looking behind the fuse box but on the inside of the car.

on 1994 C280 had it in the top left corner of the engine bay (if you stand facing the front of the car). It was under a big black plastic lid. try looking there. try also listening for the relay to click as the lights go on and off, then trace it down.

Thanks for the reply;

I have that big plastic lid but its on the right (right hand drive maybe?)

When you switch the lights on it the flashing stops but the light go out altogether, about 30mins of driving 'bing' and on they come -

The temp gauge does the same, does nothing then after 30mins, 'bing' - do you think they aall share the same relay or earth?

well not sure they all share the same relay or ground but i know that relay controls alot. If you can't find it in any of those locations then check right behind the center counsel at the top, that is where it is on w123.

Do you mean the footwell inside the car or the wheel well in the trunk?

Bump,

Well having lived with this for quite a while now I made a small BUT hopefully significant discovery.

When you turn the dash board light dimmer down they heater console lights stop flashing and come on, turn the dash lights up and off they go again.

Could it be the dimmer module?

YES

'Sounds like The "Reostat"
That's the button you push in to reset the odometer...If you turn it clockwise
it increases the Lumens output of the Lights.

Yes Reostat is a separate item

Yours MAY be cleanable
(It is a Fragile curved Spring resting in a ceramic holder that the Arm slides across.)

There may also be some sort of relay involved. The 30 minute "time out"
sequence with the lights points to a relay problem.
(especially ,if your wiring diagram denotes one.)

Dash (Binnacle ) Lights

I've not the Wiring diagram for the chassis.

Another thought,Have you ever noticed in the dark
when the Glow Plug relay is feeding power to the
Glow Plugs ,The Interior Lights [Especially the Overhead] DIM until the Glow relay "Thunks" open
and no longer pulls power from the Electrical system?

That's "almost" what your Binnacle lights are doing...
So, If there's a relay in their circuitry ,It may be "Hanging Up" (Staying Active and pulling power)

Is there ANY way your Pre-Glow Relay is staying
active (Pulling Power to feed the "AfterGlow" function)??????
30 Minutes is WAY Too long for a GP Relay to
stay Active.

A test light with the positive clip affixed to the
Glow Plug end(With the wire connection).
And the negative wire of the test light to Ground.
The Test light will stay on as long as the Glow Relay is feeding power to the Glow Plugs.
You can do the same thing with a DMM.

This will show you the exact time of AfterGlow
and when the GP Relay shuts off.

If you've got a bad temperature sensor for the GP
relay ,it may be sticking the relay ON too long.

Jeremy5848 details a permanent "AfterGlow" light (In the Dash) beginning in
