Question Sourcing Reman Steering Box for W123

The time is growing near to replace my steering box. It is sloppy, especially to the left. The front end/steering linkages are tight - the slop is in the box. I have tried loosening the adjustment screw and I am at the limit. I have maybe 1.5-1.75" of play at speed on the highway that I really don't like. Its the last outstanding project on my restoration...

How have results been with reman boxes? I have seen a pictorial on DIY resealing of a W123 P/S box, but I am concerned my gears are worn internally beyond a reseal. I want to do this project once, not twice :-)

Sources for a reman box. I have found -

********AZ - $~365 http://www.***************/search/product.aspx?sid=ld0dfg45tbd5z3ac3ju5dtiv&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193767@300DT&year=1982&cid=steering@steering&gid=7416@Steering%20Gear%20Box
Performance Products - $~690 http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/productpage.aspx?pid=105895&cid=19&sid=448
Mercedesshop.com - $~544 $~http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1Y30QN7KB2D60VKWYW&year=1982&make=MB&model=300-DT-001&category=M&part=Steering+Gearbox

anywhere else people have had luck with?

dd

C&M Hydraulics in Las Vegas has a good reputation. They only sell to retailers. You may want to give them a call and find out who they distribute to.

From the MBCA site:

"My name is Chris Brown I own C & M Hydraulics. We have been in Bus. for almost 14 years. We deal only with the larger aftermarket MBZ parts dist.. Most of the online dist. can get our parts if you ask. All we do is MBZ P/S Pumps, P/S Gearboxs, and Air Pumps with clutches. If you have any questions feel free to call 702.734.8090

Good Luck,
Chris"

I put a reman in one of my 83 240ds about fifteen years ago and was unhappy with the results. The steering was stiff for over a year as it broke in.

I would look for a good used box.

I happen to have two for sale in parts that I obtained about fifteen years ago so they will be low mileage compared to anything you are likely to find in a yard now.
