85 300sd starts off in 3rd?

What would cause that? This is a friend's car. It started doing this recently after glow plug and fuel filter replacements. I'm going to take a look at it in the next couple of days--sounds to me like he probably bumped a vac line somewhere. It runs well otherwise--starts, idles shuts down and revs nicely. Just seems to start off in gears way too high causing very sluggish town driving. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No, starts off in at least second and most likely 3rd.

Check the linkage. If it's jammed up somewhere it'll make acceleration REALLLLY slow. Your gearing may be fine.
