Question 3-4 shift problem 1982 300 SD

MB Brethern

I have an 82 SD with 230k that with a 3-4 shift problem.

last summer when first started it would flare at the 3-4 shift and not engage until several miles when the car heated up. This happened after getting the a/c fixed.

Throughout the entire winter the car shifted fine. Come May and the process began all over again. This time w/o using the a/c and it doesn't engage in 4th after several miles of heating up.

Took it to the mechanic. He put a quart of fluid in and test drove it. worked fine. Did some other work on the car, and not its back to its old tricks, not engaging into 4th.

Any help is most grateful.

Thanks you

John Kelly

Your transmission might be overdue for an oil and filter change.

If I remember correctly the K-2 valve and spring handle the 3-4 shift and you can change that spring the same way you change the K-1 spring only on the other end of the valve body....

I'm sorry but I don't know if that would apply. I don't remember where I got that diagram and it's the only one I have.
