Press it to stand the hood straight up, and to release to lower it again.

Mine is the same black as my hood paint, you release the one on the drivers side first and raise it an inch or so and then you have to go release the passenger side one in order to stand the hood up.
You only have to release the one on the drivers side in order to lower it again. Remember when jacking the car in a low ceiling garage that it's vertical, and remember when leaving it outdoors in high wind that the hinges can bend. Does anybody know why these hoods go vertical? I have two theories - one is that it was a provision for engine cranes to perform engine swaps. My second theory - and the reason I use it - is that it was put there to stop me from banging my head on the grille... again... and again... |

Designed by engineers(kind individuals that love to tinker and check their oil) for engineers(the rest of us poor slobs that check our oil). They HATE banging their heads. I do to.

Engine access. Mercedes-Benz designed cars to be serviced and thus have a long and reliable life.
The vertical hood improves engine access from the sides, prevents bumping your head, and much improves the available light to work on the engine.
