Replacing Stock Air filter with straight flow cone k+n?

Any suggestions on where to find parts to install a pipe and cone shaped style k&n type filter which will hold up? I've looked and can't find any specifics on where to find any of the parts used on some the other posts. thanks

I have a K&N filter element (Federal 84 300D) that replaces and fits into the stock air filter housing.
I way back I started a thread to see if I could use something else to wash the filter element with and it started a lot of controversy; take a look.

Some people do not like the cone shaped ones as they are exposed to the hot air under the hood.
I saw this thread and decided to include it.

I use one of these for that reason. They're crappy and overpriced though. I've been looking for something bigger (more surface area) and more robust that'll fit where I need it to go, but for now this works.

I never posted this information as I wanted to try it again.
I have a digital Thermometer with a probe long enough the I put it under the hood at the end of my air filter horn (Federal air filter housing) which would be about where one of those Cone type filters would be under the hood and I ran the car on the Freeway to get it hot and drove around town and sat at some long Traffic Signals. I also put the probe all the way up front where the cold air would go into the air filter and drove around again.
I was surprised to find out that while you are moving even in slow traffic the outside and under the hood temperature is not significantly different. However, when you idle the under the hood temperature went up from the 76 degree outside temp to 98-110 degrees under the hood.
My conclusion is that you do no harm by having the end of the air intake system under the hood as it only made a differance when you sat at idle. When you start moving there is enough air flow that you get the colder outside air anyway.
If you want to try the experiment youself (cheaper than a new intake system) I bought the thermometer at Target and it has a 36 inch long steel braided covered wire. You are supposed to stick the probe in what you are cooking in the oven to measure the inside temp of it and run the cable out of the oven door and the Digital display has magnets on the back to stick to you oven/car hood. I believe it cost around $16.
Get someone with good eyes to ride along with you to do the reading of the thermostat.

I don't think I could bring myself to use a filter I can see light through on my car...

K&N is just an air strainer, it depends on the oil to catch dirt as it passes by (through) the filter. The gauze really does nothing to filter the air, it only holds the oil.

Read though this site and you will see why "performance" filters are junk. http://home.stny.rr.com/jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

I suggest you check out MTUpower's profile. he has replaced the stock MB filter housing with a GM 3.8L Air box. He is running an intercooler as well, but the GM airbox apparently fits without major modification. The only question is what to do with the crankcase breather tube oil separator.

Don't do it, especially if you have a turbo.

Edit: I guess you do - sig "1982 300D Turbo"

Some where in the thread the K&N battle has already been fought. No sense going over it again.

Also I believe it is Fram has a filter cleanable filter element that dose not need oil; but I do not think they make them for older Mercedes yet.

Anybody know which GM 3.8 liter air box? They put the 3.8 liter in a pretty wide range of vehicles and I'd be willing to bet some of them have a lot better airbox design than others.

I couldn't find any info in MTUPower's profile...

There is only one that fits. Square box with in and out on different ends. You will need a K&N filter in it But atleast its cold air. I pick mine up from the area next to the headlight ala W126

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely look into that.

rcounts, here's the thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=208787

Why would you need a K&N element? Does the OEM filter for the GM 3.8L not flow enough air for the 617?
