Help! Steering wheel won't center

92 300D (W124)

I need to sort out my steering issues. It's not terribly sloppy, per se, but the wheel won't return to center after a turn. I have tried backing off the adjustment at the box and have gone several turns now with still no centering of the wheel. Steering is very easy -- almost TOO easy. Might a dead steering damper add to the problem?

This is driving me nutty; the car wanders all over the road (esp. on the highway and esp. inj wind) with the slightest input of the wheel, and a slight correction seems to OVER correct. Struts/shocks are new, sway bar bushings are new, drag links are new, and tie rods feel fine and appear relatively new (I just bought the car this spring).

Thanks!

Which way did you adjust it? Sounds like you need to go the opposite way of "adjusting to remove SW play"

I dialed CW -- as I understand it, CCW tightens the steering up, correct? FWIW, the adjuster pin was seized in the lock nut pretty well, and initially it would not turn independent of the lock nut. I adjust it several turns CW and there is still little/no play in the wheel. Very strange.

That is strange. I do not have the w124. I hope the steering gearbox is not shot.

Thanks nevertheless for the reply; hopefully I'll get it sorted out! If not, there are always junkyard parts. I discovered just now that my subframe bushings are shot; I am sure that doesn't help with the dartiness on the highway!

Thanks again...
