Pulling motor ona 80 300SD...
Well. I found a motor at JY -is it easier to pull with tranny? What size bits / sockets are needed for the torque converter / bellhousing / stater?
Any other tips appeciated. |

Bring a sawzall to cut the radiator crossmember.

you need like a 8 and 10 mm hex for starter and engine mounts respectively, 13 mm for TC bolts, 17 mm for bellhousing bolts
when i go to a PNP i take a full tool box of common tools (set of metric up to 19mm sockets, hex up to 17mm, torx to T60 i think, metric wrenches, vice grips, screw driver (flat and pillips), a 27mm deep socket, ratchet, extensions and breaker bar.) that should get just about all you need off. take your choice of 3/8 or 1/2. i would say follow forced cut the rad support and pull it all out the front would be the easiest.

Whats a load leveler? Does it have something to do with the hoist?

I pulled two 617s in a day a couple of weeks ago. both with transmissions. pulled the bad one out of my SD and the good one out of my dads wrecked SD. I left the oil cooler connected to the engine, the power steering stayed with the car, and the ac compressor to the car as well. undo the starter wires, but trace the glowpug wires to where they plug into the car. all you have to do is unplug them. hardest part was the flex plate. the whole process was extremely easy but time consuming.
Did i mention that i pulled both engines by myself, with a Bobcat? oh yeah, don't forget the ground strap!

I pulled a motor and tranny out of a 300d without a load leveler and installed them both into a sd without a load leveler. I did all of this by my self, so it cant be too hard. Its just a pain in the ass, and I didn't do any cutting. Took me one day. One thing that helps is to put a floor jack under the tail housing of the tranny, that way you can lower that as you need to and it will roll toward the front of the car as you lift the engine out. The single hardest part is predicting how long your rear chains need to be compared to your front in order to get the angle correct. I had to set the engine back in several times. And another thing, have fun with the engine mounts. The big allen screw on the bottom in the cross member likes to strip. You can either just rip the motor off the mounts, unscrew the two 6mm allens in the top sides of the mounts, or cut the motor mounts (if your motor is coming out of a 300d, their worthless to you anyway).
