Troluble Shifting into P

My newly acquired '81 300SD has a difficult time shifting into P sometimes. I have to go back and forth b/w P and D for it to catch. My buddy says it might be either the shift linkage or some bushing... What do you think???

Oftentimes its simply one of these. Or a french fry.....

Probably the bushing either at the trans or the shifter, if they both are gone it won't go into park. For a quick fix, try a short piece of 5/16" fuel line for a temporary bushing.

Mine goes into park ok, but does not go all the way to drive. I have to put it in N slot for the reg D and if I drop it into D it's in 3rd. Would this be the same problem???

Doc.

That sounds more like your NSS.

And what would my NSS be???

Neutral safety switch

But it sounds like an out of adjustment shifter or bad bushings.

Very simple to fix. My 5 year old could probably get it done.
