All hail the 1M-miler 616!

http://www.ajc.com/ajccars/content/ajccars/content/stories/2008/05/28/carmercedes_0531.html

From right here in my neck of the woods.

Never thought I'd actually see a million-miler that was not a taxicab. Notice that this gent purchased the car w/ 40K.

I would like to know if there's been a rebuild done since 376K. If not, then WOW .

Impressive stuff from the stubborn old 240Ds.

The key to automotive long life, Harman said, is oil changes. He changes the oil religiously every 3,000 miles.
Don't let 240Joe see that!!!!

The car, affectionately called Old Yeller, still has the original engine block, although it was rebuilt at 376,000 miles.
Thats 624,000miles after the rebuild. 376k and 624k are only average considering a few have made it to 750k without a rebuild. There is yet to be an actual million mile 61x.

True about the actual 1M mark. However, I don't agree that 625K is a realistic goal on a 61x motor. I would think that 450-500K is roughly when one needs to start considering some hard decisions even on a well-maintained motor. Such a huge standard deviation makes one wonder why some last so much longer than others.

36,000miles/year makes me think that it has seen LOTS of highway miles. Such large mileage figures are not uncommon for semi-trucks partly due to being almost completely highway driven.

I also think that much more than 500K miles is unlikely without a rebuild. The "good" cylinders in my 617 were down to about 250 psi at 438K miles (90% highway driven). These things do eventually wear out.

In addition to cylinder wear that's going to drop the compression figures, I don't see how the timing chain and sprockets and the oil pump drive can possibly go more than 500K. Without some preventative component replacement of these items, the engine is very likely to suffer catastrophic failure at or near the 500K point. These components may have been changed, but not stated.

The story did mention that the "timing chains have been replaced several times" and my guess is that other components (sprockets, oil pump drive, etc.) were likely done.

Whether the car "technically" has 1M miles is debatable, but what amazes me is that one owner has run the same car from 40K miles to over 1M. I'd say he's gotten his $17K (in 1983 that was a lot of money for a used car!) worth many times over out of this old gal.
