126 Driveshaft Centering Sleeve replacement

1983 300SD
365,000 miles

I've got the driveshafts out for flexdisk replacement. The centering sleeves are shot (rubber seal disintegrated).

I've got the service manual and I see the procedure is to drill a 10mm hole, insert a shaft, then pry it out with tire irons.

Anyone done this before? Any advise?

Check out this thread. I plan on doing this job tomorrow. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=53817&highlight=replace+flex+discs

A new center bearing support comes complete with the rubber gasket.

I saw that thread earlier but have yet to see anything on replacing the centering sleeves.

The centering sleeves (at each end of the driveshaft) and the center support bearing (supporting the center U joint) are completely different

Sorry for misleading, I misread his post.

John,

Lemme know how it goes.

I'll be doing a writeup when I finish mine if I learn anything new.

Thanks.

Cuban8;

The flex discs and center support and bearing replacement went smoothly today on my 300SD. Lots of gravel was caught above the driveshaft tunnel heat shield. My old flex discs had minor cracks developing and the center support rubber was dry but not broken. I feel it is a good preventive maintenance job.

Great.

I'm planning on doing mine every 100,000 or so.

I too found gravel and even a 2" diameter river rock jammed up there.
