All 240D owners
Has anyone taken their 240D on a long trip? Long trip can be anywhere from 90-1,000 miles. I want to take mine to either L.A. or San Diego which are both about an hour to hour and a half away from where I'm at, but the 240 seems like it won't do good going uphill. Ever taken it through the mountains? I'm just afraid if I dared to go up a mountain we have here I'll have a funeral line behind me the whole time lol Any info/advice would be awesome! thanks everyone!

if you do decide to ever go up a mountain make sure the A/C is turned off or you might over heat.

You should be okay, when you see a hill get a good running start at it. Adjust the valves if you haven't in the last year or so and do a diesel purge and you will be okay.

Road Trip
You'll do fine. Up until 3yrs ago my 240D was all I drove and I lived in N. Nevada @ 4500' and was able to take the passes with very little problem. The 240D will make you a better driver as you will have to pay attention to the road ahead and anticipate hills etc.. Make sure your filters are clean and you should have a good trip.

well he is talking about mountains and here in SoCal there are some pretty big ones. going up like say the Cahone Pass you will have quite a challenge there maybe. Just give it a chance and see how it goes just pay attention to the temp gauge.

The valves have just been adjusted, and this is going to sound horrible but, what is a Diesel purge? Is it a DIY kind of thing? Thanks for the advice!

Yah i have taken mine up to mount baldy but you will have to keep the pedal to the floor to do it. my car is also N/A with no turbo so you might be able to make a mountain. You have like 20 HP less than i do so who knows if it is possible.

I bought my first 240D in Maryland and drove it cross country. Yeah, it's a little slow going over the hills, but it's not a big deal. Having a 4 speed made it more tolerable I think. Of course, the 240D I drive now has a 617 w/ a 4 speed tranny, and it doesn't notice the hills at all.

This reminds me actually, When I got my valves adjusted, the mechanic told me I need to adjust the throttle linkage because full throttle on the pedal isn't full throttle on the actual motor. Again is this a DIY thing? Hopefully this will give me some boost on hills.

Just have a friend push the pedal to the floor and hold it while you check and see if the throttle is really wide open. Just keep adjusting the linkages until the throttle is wide open when the pedal is on the floor.

So long as you have it running right, you'll be fine. If you're talking about the grapevine hill, no worries, there'll be plenty of truckers going slow blocking 3 lanes wide everyone else will be focused on,lol. I always hated those guys, I drove truck over that hill several times... full weight tanker with the small cummins engine. Even with a running start, by time I hit the scales (had a paypass so I could whiz by) I was downshifting, climbing that hill at a whole 15mph in 2nd gear with it wound out, that's all it had, it took a half hour minimum to reach the peak going south. That 240 will do far better, and you don't have to worry about going runaway on the other side....
