does a 82 300dturbo engine fit a 80 300 NON turbo TRANNY???

i bought this really nice 1980 300td wagon.. non turbo... the engine is busted. i have a 84 300sd turbo engine. that i want to install on this car. would it work? i know the td has the vaccum stuff on the engine which this sd engine doesnt.. but im hoping to swap out the rear hydraulic shocks with regular springs and shocks.... what do you think? my main thing is if the tranny would work.. is it the same bolt pattern.?

from reading numerous posts, the consensus is that the SLS should be kept in place. Results have been poor.. Search SLS.
I have read that it (tranny) will mount up but there are issues with the starter plate, especially if it is a california. Search for 5 minutes, it is there.
Why wouldn't the SD have a vacuum shutoff? Are we talking diesel?

Keep the SLS. It rides terrible without it.

What you should do is take the head off the TD engine, rebuild it with the turbo valves and camshaft and put it on the 84 engine.

^^He might need different guides also for those stems...
And the seats are hardened on turbo heads, no?

Thats why I said to rebuild the head instead of just swapping valves.

Understood. Since you mentioned I should do my stem seals, I read in the FSM that the seat in the head is hardened for the turbo. Maybe I misread.

sorry. Forget what I said. It isn't possible to nitride harden individual spots on monolithic items such as the head. And there is no other metal other than the head material.

FSM only says:

Valve seat plating ------nitride hardened (under intake valve data)

sorry for confusion. I should be banned from posting.

lol, I figured they did some kind of hardening on all of them since there are no pressed in valve seats.

Does it have the same part number on the head?

If not, I imagine the seats could be cut and hard ones installed.

They are probably going to have different part numbers anyways from the loop->pencil glowplug type change and the TD having the SLS flange cast in.
