Newbie Stupid Car Wont Turn Off Question

I have searched the forum for 'Car wont shutoff' (and other similar search terms) threads.

My '83 300SD wont shut down when I turn off the ignition. I have tried the 'lock myself in the car' then try to shut down. It didn't. I've looked over the all of the vacuum lines and they appear to be snug. So I think I may have a bad shutoff valve.

My problem is . . . where is this valve located and how do I recognize it when I see it?

Any help would be appreciated.

It is on the Injection Pump.

connect good vacuum source to the lowest rubber line under that plastic saucer on the rear end of th IP.

If this does not work it may be a bad shut off valve

this is common and covered extensively - Having a mightvac helps diagnose leaks you would never imagine are present, visible inspection does very little

Also in the SD, your locks are on a separate electric pump in the trunk, so bad locking system will not effect the shutdown of your car.

Simple test not requiring a mity vac: Remove vacuum line from shut off valve. Put a 3' piece of vacuum hose in its place. With engine running, suck on vacuum hose with three long hard sucks. If the engine shuts off, the shut off valve is ok and the vacuum problem is elsewhere. If you get a mouthful of engine oil and engine fails to turn off, shut off diaphragm has failed and needs to be replaced.
If the former, run vacuum line out of engine compartment at cowl and shut hood. You can now shut off your engine without having to open the hood by simply sucking on the line. This is either a temporary or permanent solution dependent on your 'redneck' factor index.

It's basically easy

It's basically an easy repair .... after you've done it. Prior to that, it seems daunting.

You can go to AutoZone, they'll let you use a vac pump for free; I used it right there in their parking lot. Take off a hose from the SOV (shut off valve), pump the vac on it to see if the lever goes down and stays down. I think it should stay down for about 6 seconds before slowly coming back up. If the SOV is messed up, it might only go down for a second or two, then come back up.

Replace the SOV, but do take not of the extreme physical dangers of a runaway diesel. Once you replace the valve, you need to be prepared to starve the engine of air, just in case you installed the valve wrong.

Also, take note when you take the old one out, do it slowly so you can see how the new one goes in.

Good luck,
