79 and 83 300sd parts interchange
My 83sd (w126) has a bad trans in it. Found a 79 (w116?) with a bad engine. What parts will swap? and which car is the better car if the parts will swap eneough?
thanks Doug

Earlier w116 300SD uses a rod and not bowden cable to help regulate tranny shifts, hence ye dont want the earlier trans in yer modern w126 300SD.
For my money I'd toss yer existing engine into the w116 car (all other factors being equal) knowing the earlier Benz outhandles the later version, plus the w116 being most classic of the 300SD series. Extremely controversial too, USA *only* got em - makin these the holy grail of European desirable vehicles. Am kinda surprised more Europeans dont snatch em and ship em overseas. |

Thanks,
I have never driven any but the w126. Which I like, the handling is not great, but I sped 80% of my time on the hwy. If the w116 is not a much superior car, then I will continue to look for a w126, thanks again
