Thumbs up '84 190D, 2.2, 5 speed

I have only had this car on the road for a month or so......and the Odometer is not working at the moment......but I have been keeping track if where I go and the distances known from my 300D......my guestimate is around 40 MPG.

This is all on 1 and 2 lane country roads, and 2 and 4 lane US 33 and US 50....some of the 1 lane country roads are gravel.....

All roads here are 55 MPH limits unless otherwise marked......so you may assume that the car has been running mostly between 45 and 65 MPH in 4th and 5th gear......

Probably nothing wrong.

To do better you would probably need to change the gearing in the rear end or go to the five speed manual.

Agree with jetmugg

5spd swap in '87 190dt, mine is the original diff., 25 minute commute mostly highway, I can't put it in 5th till interstate but then it's sipping the fuel...last two fillups 556 miles 13.044 gallons = 42.6mpg, and 523 miles 12.682 gallons = 41.2mpg, no a/c. I'm kinda curious what a long highway trip would get...

I have been seriously considering swapping to a 2.65 rear in the '85 2.2. Would make it a serious dog, probably worse than a 240, but should push the milage to near 50 mpg

Job.

Job:
I just put my 2nd "Frankenbenz" on the road - a '93 body shell with '87DT engine, a 5-speed, and a 2.88 rearend. If you ever have the chance to swap to a 2.88 instead of the 2.65, don't hesitate to do it. I have had two 190D 2.5 T/5-speed cars, one with the 2.65, and one with the 2.88 rears. I find the 2.88 car much more driveable around town, and still very mild on the interstate. (about 2500 rpm at 70 mph).

My 2 cents.

Steve.

I would love to do something like that. Unfortunately it's gonna have to wait a little while, you know that whole time, money, space issue. So Steve did you get the title changed on that car to say it's a diesel? I don't know if it's the same there but here in Georgia we have to do emissions in counties like ours near atlanta but not on diesels, another small advantage for diesels-I was just wondering did they have to see the car?

My 84 2.2 5spd continually gets 40mpg+ on the highway, and my 86 2.5 5spd gets 37-40 highway, usually commuting to work from 70-80 mph.

My 2.5T gets about 31mpg if I baby it, and about 26-27 if I race everybody. The best I ever got in the 3 years of having it was 33mpg. I noticed I got about a 3mpg drop when I went to the bigger 16x7 rims, but that could also be attributed to the fact that the original rims had baldy tires on it (i.e. ghetto low-rolling-resistance ) and the 16s have newer tires on them. BTW, mine has 252,xxx miles on it and the terrain is mostly flat, but also mostly city driving. I use 5w40 synthetic semi oil, so I'm sure that helps a little bit.

Steve: I am planning on converting mine to a 5 spd, and already have the trans etc out of a 190E 2.3L. I will keep the original rear end for now, but what models can I get the 2.88 rear end from?

2.6's for sure.

Both 2.88 rears that I have came out of 2.6L gassers, but that may not be the only source. There is a chart somewhere which shows all the available years, engines, trannies, and rearend ratios in one spreadsheet.

Sounds like it could use some work.

Jeff, the thing is it runs like a champ. I do get fuel-smoke at WOT though, but that just means I need to turn up the boost to compensate.

33 mpg in town and 42 on the freeway - always driven easily however.

I would be surprised if the rack or injectors aren't out of spec. It can run well, but without everything balanced it isn't efficient. I'd also look at dragging brakes, possibly a fan clutch that is not releasing, something. I drove my 190Dt hard, but always turned mid-upper 30s in mixed driving, ... low 40s on a long mostly 2-lane run I made occasionally. I made my calculations with the GPS, maybe you've got a happy odometer?

What RPM's are we talking about? I always kept mine below 3000 rpms. I think once or twice I took it as high as 3200 rpms, but I was never in a hurry when I drove it and babied it, like I typically do all of my cars, but I have been told that diesels need to be driven "hard" occasionally, but I just could not bring myself to do it... lol. Now I am hearing of people going 4K-4500 rpms with these.
