Anything is possible if you have the fabrication skills and enough money. A 2.2 in an SEL would be dangerously slow.

1-10? Unknown. Nobody has done it yet.

Assume you will have to make new engine mount arms or offset them, make a transmission mount or adapt one from a different model, lengthen the driveshaft, fan shroud to reach the engine, install the glowplug timer/controller, adapt the A/C system, change the front springs, register it as a model configuration that never existed and make it pass emissions.

I'll have to second the "why on earth would you want to do this" vote. might as well be putting the 3-cyl smart car engine in it.

Since this engine never came as an option in tis car, I'd have to say on the difficulty scale its goig to be damn close to the hard end since you'll have to make a lot of the parts necessary to make this work.

My advice? find a smaller recipient vehicle or bigger donor engine if you're itchin to do an engine swap.

See, now I differ. This shouldn't be that hard. Sure it was never built that way, but I don't see the big deal. The recipient will be 7 or 800# heavier than the 190 that it came in. Thats like four adults and some luggage, or a car pulling a small trailer.

Choose your gear ratio in the rear end carefully. I would take the one from the 190 along with the engine and tranny.

It won't win any races but it won't be much worse than a standard 240d.

These times of high fuel costs call for drastic measures. This idea does not sound that bad to me.

Good luck with it.

You know, in 2006 we had problems with e.coli tainted spinach, this year we have salmonella tainted tomatoes, and next year, it'll be giant laughing mutant pears.

Why 220SDL = epic fail?
Its only 80 less than a 300SDL. That's only like 25%.

143 HP in a 300SDL.

Lets take 50% of the Horsepower in a 300SDL....I'll show my work so you understand....

(143 X 50%) = 71.5 hp.

190D 2.2 = 72 hp. So about HALF (~50%) the horsepower of a 300SDL.....

Where is the 25% you're getting?
