w116 compressor, help please.

So my compressor locked up on my 1979 300sd. I have had several people tell me that this compressor is a GM one that I can pick up for around $100. That sounds great but it just hasnt happened. Everyone I've called, including Phil, has given me a price much higher.
Can anyone who has been down this road, give me some pointers please? THanks!

The R-4 remans usually run about 125-150 depending on who you call. New runs $220 and up, again depending on the source. You should also change the drier and flush the system when changing out a failed compressor.

From what i hear, the rebuilt ones are junk. Someone recommended doing the rebuild myself, anyone done that yet?

BTT- So, I'm still trying to figure out if there is any truth to someone telling me a $100 GM compressor will work in my 79 W116. I'm not really wanting to drop $300 on a mercedes one. Has anyone replaced their compressor with an early 80's GM? Thanks!

Josh

Josh

The R-4 compressor that was OEM on my car was GM. I replaced it two years ago with a reman R-4. Compressor cost was around $130.

Checking my local McParts place today, I find two reman R-4's available, one for $169.98 and one for $134.99 (both with clutch).

If your compressor looks like the one below, you have the R-4, and it should be easy to get. The decision on new vs. reman is up to you. My opinion is that reman is ok for R-12 installations, new is best for R-134a.

Yeah, That is what mine looks like and I have found them for a good price. I was just a little nervous since it didnt actually have my car in the massive list of cars that it would work for. I guess I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on one. Thanks for your help!
