Windshield Replacement

Hey yall I got myself a 1985 300sd. I friggin dump truck dropped a few stones on the highway a couple months back and it cracked my windshield. Since then the crack has gotten bigger and bigger and now its time for a replacement.

My question is which windshields can I use in the place of mine? will any of the 126's work? Theres an abundance of SEL's and SEC's around my neck of the woods so before the dismantlers try to pull a fast one with their "i know what I sell" theology, Ill check my most trusted e-pals

Thats a great price. I was kind of hesitant to get anything new for the exterior of the car since it kind of throws off that uniform wear look that I have spent 25 yrs working on lol. But I think ill make an exception thanks for the reference

Oh I just found out that Sadelite offers 63% off in my location. Cost will only be 175+ taxes. Im a happy camper!

You need to check and be sure this includes the windshield seal/gasket. Many of the quotes include fine print that states it's extra.

Even if it is extra, new most often beats used when you consider the value of your time in finding a used one and installing it.

I'm getting ready to replace the broken Chinese windshield (Curbstoner's, it's a long story.) in my 560SEC. I called all around and found various prices. I wanted Sekurit glass, but have not found any 126 windshields available. So it looks like a cal back to Safelite...since the manufacture their own glass and I believe it is manufactured here in the good old USA.

Go with a new windshield, as the used ones rarely hold up and you are very lucky if it gets put in without being broken(my case with the Curbstoner, that, and copious amounts of clear RTV and whistles and leaks. (actually whistles where it leaks...go figure.)

Be careful it is GOOD Mercedes Benz glass. Get SIGLA, SEKURIT or PPG.

Not XYG. That stuff is cra p and it is from Shanghai, China, called Xingyi Glass Company. It has the TuV approved sticker, but if you want the best, without worry of optical distortion, clouding, or pitting prematurely, don't go for it.

This is the Chinese windshield that cracked in CHADAHAR's car. I know because I bought that car, and Chadahar flew up here, and picked it up and drove it back home. His XYG windshield is a piece of c rap.

You get what you pay for: you pay cheap, you get cheap...

Apparently, all the Insurance companies are pushing off all this cheap Chinese glass these days to save money.

I got it not knowing, it was only $284 with the insurance deductible.

That is cheap. I bought the SIGLA w/s back in 2002 and paid myself, and it cost $1500 in Oakland, California!!

You want a Chinese or a German windshield in front of you? Easy answer for me.

I got I think a PPG for mine last time, I forget the exact brand but its what Volvo uses. Insurance covered it.

When I get it painted since their is a nice chunk taken out of it I'll get them to replace it again, this time I want Sekurit so all the glass match's.

Windsheilds at least around here are very much disposable, I wouldn't waste time on a used on. On any car driven in the winter they get sand blasted and you can't see out of them after a few years.

Call around for prices. Most companies come to your house to do it now.
I remember thinking I would save some money and do a windshield myself once. I was so proud of the install until about 2 months later when water started dumping onto my dash. lol

im trying to get a windshield replaced on my 300sd. the 250 dollar repair bill is an un-fathomable amount of money for me so I figuered I would go to pick n pull and get a piece for 40 bucks. So tonight I took off all the trim and found that the w126 windshields use a silicone type sealant instead of a rubber seal. I tried removing the windshield and well its glued in. It broke to bits. How in the hell am I going to get one intact from pic n pull? Its like a one time use thing. You set it in and break it to hell to get it out. Im thinking my only choice it to have a the local glass shop get the glass and silicone it in and I will do all the molding to save money and to make sure its done correctly.

wow this really seems to be more complicated than I thought it would be?

has anyone replaced their windshield with one from safelite? Any comments? I really thought class was glass (some may resist chips better though) but i didnt realize clouding etc would be an issue. I live in Southern California and if anything there is a lot of sun. Not to much of the sand/snow issues some of you get on the east side of things.

The only option is to get a new windshield. You cant remove them without breaking them. I just sat in my car for 10 minutes before I finaly kicked a hole through the glass after I realized Ill never be able to afford a new windshield. Im hoping they will give me a discount since I already did all the moulding and can do it again. All i need them to do is put glue on a new piece of glass and set it on there

The W126 is quite different from the 123, they don't use a rubber seal. You get a tube of sealant from the dealer for about $30 and glue it in.

300SD - 1983 Tinted windshield for $ 156.00

Try Windshieldsupplies.net for a quote. Picked mine up local....10 miles from home. After removal of your glass, it is just a drop-in with the proper goop applied.

Regards

You just cut out the windshield with a piano wire. I have used carpet knifes before also. They are not that tough to get out without breaking once you know how.

Go to pick and pull with a carpet knife and a bunch of extra blades. If you can find a piano wire it will make it a lot easier. Plan on a couple hours to get it out for your first one.

I would use a used one if I found a nice one.
