AC Not Working - 87 300D ... rant

So an update here from my last thread - 87 300D, blows pretty cold at speed, and warm at idle.

I took it into a shop today to be looked at. These are the same ppl that made it blow cold 2 yrs ago, so I figured I'd pony up the cash for round 2. They are the most honest AC shop I can find in Atlanta when its 97F outside (which aint sayin much!) anyways.

They call a while later and say the pressure switch on the evap is bad and needs repl. Ive read a thing or 2 about this AC and have done some work on it (which is prob 90% of the reason you and I are having this conversation) but I knew dam well the compressor was working when I brought it in. Hell it was blowing cold in the 80 deg morning heat. It was just sitting still (WITH COMP RUNNING) that it was heating up. So I ask the guy WHICH pressure switch - theres 2. 1 for compressor, 1 for aux fan. He checks and says its 1 for comp. I say comp was working when I brought it in. He says well it isnt now. Great...

So I go pick it up and talk to mechanic. We look at engine and I see a bunch of dye/freon blown all over the back of headlight and he says see - its leaking at the switch. I confess to having charged it myself with ES12A a few weeks earlier, with proper gauges and it was fully charged. He says it wasnt fully charged when he got it and when he blew in the Freeze 12 (or whatever crap they charge me R12 price for thats not R12) he had it blowing cold and was enjoying the nice cold temps at idle inside car. Then the switch blows and no more freon.

I guess I dont have too much recourse, the thing has 273k miles on it I guess this sort of comes with the terrority. So they are charging me $75 diagnosis fee. Translation : the plastic pressure switch broke when we charged/overcharged it so Im getting billed $75 for that. I have to buy part from MB dealer (reasonable considering I get wholesale), then they will install and evac/recharge for another $125.

Whatever, if it blows cold when I get it $200 well spent. Just pissed about $75 fee for breaking the switch under recharge then billing me for it. Like I said, I cant really argue too much with them being the car is so old, its possible they did things by the book (if this Indy even has a book) and the switch just let go. At least he HAD it blowing cold at idle, thats more than I can say I did.

Every June we go thru this bull*****...guess thats part of owning classic benz (or any classic car for that matter).

Guess I'll crack wallet open and pay up tomorrow, just kinda pissed about $75 diagnosis fee. As far as AC shops in Atlanta go about right now, Im surprised most of them can even unscrew the schraeder cap with their cloven hooves.

End of rant...

Mixing refrigerants? That's not a good idea.
